Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Not What I Expected...

I was hesitant to listen to this book because I thought it would have disturbing torture in it. It doesn't. It is about futuristic concepts conceived in the late 1890's and how they impact a specific apartment's tenants today. I can't say more or I will spoil the surprises in this excellently read book!

I'm really surprised by all the bad U.S. reviews

I love Ray Porter and would listen to just about anything he reads. I find it amazing that he was able to do so many different voices, sometimes he flubbed a couple by using one voice for another and Andrew's voice had an accent that by the end of the book sometimes was slipped. I'm not sure where Tim's voice came from, because it doesn't even sound possible that it came from Ray Porter. But, I read this because I had originally read The Fold and really enjoyed it. I don't actually understand why these two books are part of a series, they have nothing to do with one another and you do not have to read one to read the other or read them in order. I read them out of order. I actually enjoyed this more than The Fold. I loved all the characters and liked the way that they all found each other and worked together. Many times I found myself wondering if I would have joined this group, and I'd like to think so, but probably not. This is way more SciFi than horror, but I'm not much for going down to the basement when all the lights go out or opening a door when you're sure you shouldn't. I'm more of a join the group that hides under the bed.

Fun, suspenseful adventure!

Loved it! What kicks off as an intriguing mystery morphs into a great sci fi thriller! Characters were fun and well done, the story was well-thought-out and unique. Couldn't stop listening!

Some things I liked, and didn't like.

Any additional comments?

Okay, is this a good sci-fi books to keep your thirst for these types of books happy? Yes. It's well read by the narrator, has a good story, and if you're read The Fold from the same author, you may be happy that this is essentially the same world...otherwise, there are elements from that book that reappear in this book. That isn't a bad thing in that it kind of produces a world that, if you like it, you get to revisit it from the same author.

Now, there is a spoiler coming, so don't read on if you haven't read the book...SPOILER ALERT, SPOILER ALERT!

Here comes a spoiler, by the way...

One thing that really was a thumbs down for me with this book was when Andrew turned all the knobs and levers, and they all finally got into the control room after he did it and neutralized him as well as his cohorts, NOT ONE PERSON decided to at least go to the knobs and levers to see if they could put them back to where they were right then and there. At least go up, see how hopeless it may be, then make the decision to go outside. I hate to be nitpicky, it's fiction afterall, and characters should make careless stress induced decisions. But, this decision, to not even look at the machine just seemed ridiculous to me. I realize that, later, Xela and Debbie took this upon themselves.

Book was definitely a surprise, not what I thought

I listened to the audiobook and the reader did a good job with the voices. As far as story, it felt like it it really took a while to get to anything good, but I hung on and it was worth it. The romance was unneeded but acceptable, the descriptions were good and complete so you got a picture of the building and the creatures and the landscape without drowning in detail. There are really two stories here and this could have been two books, but I'm glad the author gave us one long book instead of two short books. Characters were a bit innocent for how I think real life is, but within reason. For a book on sale, it eas good for me.
