Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Loved this book!

I will be listening to more Peter Clines. This was a fun book, a good escape! I was so happy when I feared a "same old, same old" ending and was thrown a twist. Thank you for writing a strong ending for this tale.

The narration was surprisingly good as well. I will also look for more Ray Porter narration.

Can I haz more?

On an impulse, I picked up and read this book called The Fold. No idea what it was. By the end I was dying for a series. Didn’t figure there was one, but it looked like Clines wrote a number of books, so I considered them until I found another one that might be my speed of sci-fi thriller. What a delight to have stumbled across the prequel to The Fold! They’re both plenty odd, and while this one has a couple of sluggish spots, it’s still super fun. I’m looking forward to my next Clines novel.

so i enjoyed it but its not for me.

I enjoyed the book, the performance was great. also the writing was a bit young style, and had too much sex references. like every other line. never ment anyone who talks like that. its also relies heavily on the universe HP lovevraft universe to be effective. but it does not really add, it almost subtracts with how silly parts of it are for the monsters.

Surprisingly good -- both the performance and the

story. Solid entertainment. Not the same old thing for sure. Clines and Porter deliver here.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

Would you listen to 14 again? Why?

What Ididn't realize prior to reading the book was that it was Sci-Fi and I'm not a fan of that genre.

What was one of the most memorable moments of 14?

I'll try to answer this without any spoilers. The most memorable moment for me was the moment where, during thier exploration of the building, one of the tenants flipped a switch, something wierd happened and it became apparent to everyone that their living situation was FAR more complicated than they thought.

I remember thinking, "what in the world is going on in this place?"

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

I liked everything about Ray Porters performance. He had a very pleasant voice to listen to, he read at a very comfortable pace with all the right voice inflections and each character had a different voice that readers could easily recognize. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to him.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Because I'm not a Sci-Fi fan, my extreme reaction was disbelief. I was totally hoooked and intrigued by this story right up until the last couple of chapters when it took a sharp turn. At that point, I no longer wanted to finish the book, but felt I had to because I had come so far.

A Fun Ride With A Boring End

I thought the mystery was great fun! It had me hooked early on and I was just as curious as the main characters – they really brought me along on their preposterous adventure; I didn’t want to put it down.

The story was little Scooby-doo-ish: a home grown team of sleuths investigating a multitude of strange happenings around them, a suspicious “The Creepy Caretaker”, the discovery of something HUGE... is it paranormal? Or an elaborate trick? you know how it goes.

I think the author’s references to Scooby Doo throughout the story was a little wink to the reader but I saw it as irreverent fun, it wasn’t irritating.

Stop reading now if you don’t want a spoiler.

I didn’t care for the last part: falling into an apocalyptic world of scary beings. Running away from the strange creatures. Trying to avoid becoming lunch for aliens... I could have done without all of that – it was too long and frankly not that interesting. Not sure what kind of action-climax I would have preferred, but this one missed the mark for me.

Amazed By It's Greatness

This was a completely random choice, and it turned out to be one of the most suspenseful audio books I have heard. I could not wait for my next commute to or from work because this was that amazing. From the reader's voice to the fresh and witty characters, and the original story line I was thoroughly and completely entertained. I even had that spine-tingling sensation during some parts of the book, and it was awesome. I would NEVER have chosen this if I had known it was a science fiction book. I completely surprised myself and absolutely came out a winner! I highly recommend you give it a try, even if sci-fi is not your thing.

Great intro to the larger universe

I'm really enjoying the threshold series I listen to it out of order simply because the first one I stumbled on was because of just that, stumbling on it. even listening to that out of order I like the whole universe as it's built and the way Peter Clein's protagonist keep poking at the edge of reality and finding out only something horrible awaits.

in a world of far too few lovecraftian horror books this series is a welcome surprise.
