Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Fun and creative mystery!

This story was completely unexpected. It is a mystery that doesn't rely on sex, money and gore. While there are deaths involved in the story it doesn't involve the detailed blood and guts sensationalism on which many of today's mystery writers rely.

The characters are well-developed in an entertaining way. The author does not get bogged down in relationship interaction that often becomes cumbersome and unrealistic in other books. Each character has his or her own distinct personality without being annoying.

If you're looking for a light summer mystery which will hold your attention. This is your book.

Unexpected Hit!

What an original story! I enjoyed it even more the second time I listened to it. I rarely re-listen to books, but this one was so good, I shared it with others on a road trip. I caught more details the second time and everyone enjoyed it tremendously!

This book took a left turn

Would you listen to 14 again? Why?

Probably not. The book was really good and then it took this very far left turn and it became very unreal.

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

Very good job.

A stay-at-home thrill ride.

An excellent read in the vein of Steven King's Under the Dome or Duma Key. A great set of characters. And a fun collection of strange and quirky mysteries which all add up to one big thriller and a fun climax. I will read more from Clines.

Just ok

The book was just ok. Hard to follow a times due to the story being a little boring.

Would recommend it to all Sci-Fi/Mystery fans.

This book was sheer entertainment from page one. Clines created totally likeable, believable characters and then totally took the book to an amazing turn of events. Descriptions are detailed and vivid. Dialogue is quirky and witty and overall writing style is very enjoyable.

The only thing is that i would prefer if Mr. Ray Porter (narrating artist) would go easy on accents and not go into high-pitch mode when reading female character lines. Other than that, narration was very good, Mr. Porter has a very rich deep voice.

This is my first book by Peter Clines, but i'm definitely will check out his other books.
