Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

"A wholly original story that weaves together mystery and the apocalypse like a finely tuned band." (Evan Roy, Bricks of the Dead)

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Quirky story

Any additional comments?

14 is a quirky story well written with an interesting bunch of characters. The effort the author put into character development was worthwhile. A big plot twist takes this story into a genre you might not expect.

Great Read - Great Listen - Great Characters

Would you consider the audio edition of 14 to be better than the print version?

You do not want to read a review with any discussion of this book's plot. This book is best as a leap of faith.I am writing this scant review as a SciFi reader of 50 years. Seriously, just get it. You will enjoy every minute.

Any additional comments?

After you read this please join me in prodding the author to hurry with his next book!

long buildup for little payoff

lots of foreshadowing, well written, but the ending is somewhat disappointing. would make a better short story, a bit light for a novel.

Great Story for 3/4s of the book

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes - I t was really intriguing, a lot of clues and whodunits throughout the book. Kept me interested. However, it switched gears from plausible to complete fantasy very quickly. I wasn't expecting it and was a little disappointed.

Would you be willing to try another book from Peter Clines? Why or why not?

Sure - but after the ending I would research them a bit more.

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

Loved how he was able to change his voice into each character. None of them sounded the same. The beginning was a little stiff and hurried but I think most books are until the narrator "gets into it".

Ok

It was fine a bit slow progressing the story. Probably would have been a better read than listen

I don't like scary books

But I did like this one. The characters were engaging and likable and I wanted a happy ending..but..

Amazing

I do pay attention to other readers review, and this book is the result of that. What an amazing journey. The story line, the characters, the performance, are all remarkable. It is a bit abstract at times, and does have some rather gory scenes, but the overall value to the reader is well worth the investment.
( You do need to be into fantasy/horror somewhat to fully capture this, but man, what a ride! )

Recommended very highly!

I loved listening to this book!

If you could sum up 14 in three words, what would they be?

Imaginative, compelling, fun

What other book might you compare 14 to and why?

I can't think of another unless it would be an H.G. Wells book.

What does Ray Porter bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

His handling of the accents and the genders of the voices was great. I always knew which character was speaking. He is a great reader but not overly dramatic.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely. I walked more miles listening to this book than any book in a long time since I didn't want to stop listening.

Any additional comments?

The reader reviews sold me on this book. I don't think the Audible description does it justice.

Fun and creative mystery!

This story was completely unexpected. It is a mystery that doesn't rely on sex, money and gore. While there are deaths involved in the story it doesn't involve the detailed blood and guts sensationalism on which many of today's mystery writers rely.

The characters are well-developed in an entertaining way. The author does not get bogged down in relationship interaction that often becomes cumbersome and unrealistic in other books. Each character has his or her own distinct personality without being annoying.

If you're looking for a light summer mystery which will hold your attention. This is your book.
