Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Alright

Easy listen, narrator was great! Story is far fetched and a little shallow but I liked the characters.

Great Performance / OK Story

Ray always does a great job as a narrator so I have no qualms with his performance. The story on the other hand was bad B-Movie sci-fi with zero character development, Some parts were so easy to guess what was going to happen next that it was agonizing having to listen for 15mins of the Scooby-Do Crew characters acting dumb and confused until the next plot line was revealed. I still give it 3 stars vs 2 because it was a good book for what it was… a cheesy B movie that moved along quickly and still managed to be entertaining more often than not despite its flaws.

Good story; Great presentation

Ray Porter always does justice to the book. His performance narration is great as usual. The story is good. There are a couple of fun surprises in store, and this contemporary story nestles well within the time-worn weird science and weird horror genres. Production is good with no extras, just a chapter by chapter reading with no distractions. Nice!

Ray Porter sells it.

Great story. Sorry I hadn't read it sooner. And Ray Porter kills in his performance.

If you like science fiction this is 5 stars

This is the first book I listened to by Clines. I think he is a special author. I'm not a big fan of science fiction, at least not of this variety. And by 3/4 of the way through the book I lost interest in the story. BUT I kept listening. He developed characters in a way that I cared about them. Not just the protagonist, but a bunch of them. The dialogue was great. Mixing in modern metaphors and quotes from movies and he made it consistent with their different personalities. I like characters that have a sense of humor. Many good authors can do one or even two characters that are funny. Clines did 5 in this book. Can you imagine how hard that is? Robert Parker could do it. So can Adrian McKinty. But that's about it.

The narrator saved this book

The story had potential but the ending seemed slapped together and fell flat. What kept me listening to the end was the narrator. He did an excellent job with the different character voices. He was so good in fact that I intend on seeing what other books he has narrated from other authors.

Delightfully good read.📚

Overall, I enjoyed the story. I'm considering the series.

I liked how the main characters came together and stayed cohesive.

Towards the end I felt some cliches. A woman not operating a gunshot well, Roger who has an Engineering degree cannot remember a lever he turned even though when he used it something mysterious happened, and not one person concerned about Andrew after he gets free.

I found the needless banter when time was of the essence for them to get back to their real world. This didn't work for me.

Overall, a thumbs up.
