Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

"A wholly original story that weaves together mystery and the apocalypse like a finely tuned band." (Evan Roy, Bricks of the Dead)

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Not too bad

It's a very interesting and creative story in the way an escape room is interesting; one puzzle is solved and then that leads to a another more imaginative one. Nothing special about the writing itself though, and the characters seem more like mechanisms to tell the cool story rather than having any meaningful depth to them.

Just fun

What fun! I really enjoyed this book. The feeling of discovery as the story unfolds really was entertaining and gripping. I thought it had a Stephen Kingesk feel to it. While entertaining me it also felt real and timely as many of the tenants of the building struggle paycheck to paycheck in meaningless jobs. They discover a world that they never imagined which opens up and pulls them together. It also puts them in mortal danger.

Excellent

I have a tendency to buy an audiobook and return it after a chapter because it doesn’t grab me right away. That DID NOT happen with this book- the narrator was great the story unfolded itself in a very interesting fashion. Highly recommend for a creepy sci-fi/horror ride. Finished it by listening every spare moment for 2 days.

a few modern missiles...

would easily take out the bad entities. I know, I know, suspension of disbelief.

Good Story, Similar to "The Fold"

This was a good sci fi mystery. I could have done with a few less Scooby Doo references, but the first couple weren't bad. A little ways into this I was thinking it really sounded familiar, and finally I realized there are a few similarities to another book I read by the same author called The Fold. I didn't realize at the time that the books are part of the same universe, and The Fold is actually the second. I recently reread this and enjoyed it again - the second time through I didn't even find the Scooby Doo references quite as annoying!

A quirky, enjoyable tale of saving the world

I wasn't expecting a profound, award worthy masterpiece, just hoping to be entertained for a while on my drive to and from work. I wasn't disappointed. Not since House of Leaves had I stumbled upon a story about a building that was more than it appeared to be, then throw in some dynamic relationships and the threat of dimensional annihilation and you've got quite an engaging plot. The delivery by the reader of this audiobook was appropriate for the writing style, which is sometimes fast paced adventure and other times tongue in cheek character study. Definitely worth the price and time.
