Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Awesome

Ray Porter is an epic narrator, and Clines work is both interestingly derivative and also very unique. I enjoy everything he puts out. definitely take a listen.

Surprised I liked this

I found this book after searching titles narrated by my fave Ray Porter. I was surprised I liked this story as much as I did. It’s a little out there and has some twists but definitely kept me hooked until the end.

Enjoyable

Much better than I expected. Love the way Lovecraft was weaved into the story. Worth the credit.

Fun listen with a "great old ones" / Cthulhu vibe.

Firmly on the fantasy side of the science vs fantasy divide, this was great fun and I've listened to it multiple times. The characters are distinct, vibrant, and develop throughout the book. The banter is comfortable and entertaining. The story has many moments where the listener wants to rewind and hear a scene again. The oddness of situations is reminiscent of the Lost TV series, but also of Lovecraftian stories where some things "just should not be".

Some reviewers were complaining about the ending being cheap and unfulfilling, I disagree. This story is not like a murder mystery where everything fits neatly into place at the end, it's more about following character development through interesting and unexplainable encounters. It felt a bit like a novelization of a Role Playing Game, but in a fun way that wasn't obviously gamey.

In comparison to The Fold, this story takes place first and feels more random, but both are very good.

Amazing

Thrilled I took a chance on this book! Much like Stephen King's Revival, you're not sure where you're going with this story, but you become so invested in the characters, it's a great ride. Peter Cline manages to weave a modern story of mismatched misfits into a well trod mythos. Very well written and exciting through to the end. Ray Porter never disappoints

An excellent surprise

I bought this one on deep sale months ago. When I started it, the characters were a bit stock. And I'll not say I couldn't see several of the twists coming, some quite a ways off. But it ended up being a real delight overall. I really enjoyed it very much. It's pulpy and surprisingly warm-hearted. If you want an enjoyable genre story, with a particularly gripping conclusion, I strongly recommend it.
