Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

A clever combination of genres

It would be difficult to discuss this story In the absence of spoilers.. Let's just say that it would be right at home with the more science fictional stories if HP.Lovecraft. the performance is superb.

A Real Thrill Ride With Some Serious Hairpin Turns

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely! This is one of those reads that has you thinking in one direction while it's sneaking up on you from a completely different direction. Great characters, some intriguing subplots and even a good old red herring or two.

What did you like best about this story?

The ability of the author to gently guide the listener/reader along while building a solid mythos that comes at you from multiple directions at one time.

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

Amazing performance! Really easy to differentiate characters, moods and feelings. This narrator is one I would follow, no matter what the book he was narrating. He is THAT good.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed out loud several times, but I do not want to give anything away here.

Good, but not great

I thought the story of this book was very original and I loved all the twists and turns. There were definitely places where the author could have gone deeper but overall it was a good tight story. My problem was with the narrator. His character voices were actually pretty good. I just hated his "narrator" voice. It was completely monotone and gave you no emotion up or down. It really hurt the moments that were supposed to be emotionally charged and only worked when the characters were being sarcastic. I've listened to other Ray Porter books that I've liked but this performance just didn't work for me.

Solid Enjoyable Listen

The performance by Ray Porter was excellent. Each character came alive with a unique voice as did the action... when the momentum of the story ramped up, Ray managed to articulate that intensity without overselling it.

The story itself was solid. The set up, the charters were excellent in every way. My only issue is this. It's wonderful when a story takes an unexpected turn... as this one did... I just wasn't completely on board with it.

I did like the way Peter ended the book. It was exactly right.

MUST "READ",LOVE THE NARRATION, WORTH THE $/CREDIT

Would you consider the audio edition of 14 to be better than the print version?

I have not gotten the print version but really really enjoy my AUDIBLE VERSION !

Who was your favorite character and why?

VEEK, you will get it when you listen or read the book ! SPECIAL CHARACTER !

Which scene was your favorite?

I can specify one because I have listen to the book twice and really like the all the scenes THEY are ALL special to the story and of course do not want give anything out.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When the whole group had to pull together a dificult situation that required TEAM WORK amazingly they work thru some loops and let's say they tried very hard to trust each other, but did they overcame it, that is the question?

Any additional comments?

I have never read or listen to anything written by Peter Clines, my first, but I did enjoy it, different but GOOD, AND I will look for some MORE books from his collection...MY CONGRATULATIONS ON A GREAT WRITING I JUST COULDN'T TURN THE AUDIBLE OFF !

I don't like Sci-Fi, but......

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This one suckered me in! A lot like Stephen King, writing about everyday things/people until it turns to horror, this turned to Sci Fi. It is one of the few fiction books I found that had me sitting in a parking lot just wanting to hear a little more.

What was one of the most memorable moments of 14?

No one moment stands out, but I liked the way we got to know the individual characters.

Have you listened to any of Ray Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not, but now I will look for him. His reading made it easy to form a mental picture of each character!

Fun!

A fun sci fi/paranormal thriller! Four stars because I reserve five stars for all time favorites like Harry Potter.

The Scooby Gang's apartment building.

When I was a young juvenile delinquent, I used to break into buildings. Some were abandoned houses, others were businesses (abandoned or not), and still others were structures of unknown use (a friend of mine and I stumbled upon a bizarre underground bunker once). I didn't damage anything and wasn't a thief, but I really desperately wanted a place to explore.

Cline's '14' describes the building I always dreamt of finding. The apartments aren't even close to uniform, there's a door with 4 padlocks on it and another that isn't really a door at all. The basement seems to have a hidden room with a staircase going *further down* and the machine room on top of the building is way too large to operate the single elevator (which isn't working). All the neighbors seem slightly damaged, but most of them are friendly. Most of them...

As Nate, the main character, explores the building and starts uncovering some of the secrets, the questions only get more interesting.

Ray Porter brought this book to technicolor brilliance. Both the general narration and the dialog were done to perfection. Highly, highly recommended.

Good audio type book

This book is great on the audible version.
There is a great deal of dialogue and I personally do not like to read a book such as this.
Character development is good. Ray Porter's voice and accents very enjoyable.
The development of the story was appropriate and the ending, although a bit futuristic was well described.
