Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Good...but not a 5 star book

I got this bc of the reviews, so I wanted to leave feedback that would temper the rating for readers like me, who appreciate award winning fiction. While the audio production itself is excellent in terms of performance, the plausibility of the plot and the direction the story takes, for me, were not up the the caliber I was expecting. It reminded me of an M Night Shamalan story, and I'm not talking 6th Sense.
I listened all the way through, but man, was I rolling my eyes at choices the author made regarding the climax of the story arc.

Heir to H.P. Lovecraft

For the second time-Fold- Clines shows himself to be a student of HP Lovecraft. To me, this an Fold read like an homage to the man who created multidimensional sci-fi and was a powerful and obvious influence on may great sci-fi/horror authors, esp. Stephen King.

Great book... not so great ending

The book was great except for the ending... it just leaves you hanging with more questions. In essence, the end of the book states that there was no point to the entire

A Pleasant Surprise

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I wish I had more friends who did audible to recommend this book to. It was a great story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of 14?

The trip down the stairs from the basement.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I thought the ending was kind of expected, however, it was done well and I enjoyed how it turned out. I would like to see a next book on what happens to them afterward.

Any additional comments?

It was just a great story that slowly builds and sucks you in. The characters are believable and interesting.

Fun, Funny, and Suspenseful

This book has it all. It makes you pull your hair out at times with suspense and then laugh at the most inappropriate moments. The characters are masterfully written and performed. The story moves like a freight train. Not once was I bored or disappointed. One of my top five for sure. But then again, I love Scooby Doo and Lovecraft too.

Great Lovecraftian Fantasy

The story is entertaining and original, with just enough tie-in to H. P. Lovecraft to please a long time fantasy fan. The narration is brilliant. Highly recommended.
