Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. A very good read with an interesting plot.

Kept me engaged all the way to the end and Ray Porter did an excellent job as narrator. Very fun book.

unexpected

The narrator is wonderful. His performance enhances the story. In some ways this was completely unexpected. I was a bit disappointed in the "bad guy". seemed kinda trite.

Didn't want it to end!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes it was a great mystery and the answer was not really where I thought it was going so that's always good when the author can surprise me like that.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Nate and Tim.

Which character – as performed by Ray Porter – was your favorite?

All of them were great.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A strange building, with an even stranger purpose.

Absolutely Amazing!

Where do I begin. The story had me entranced from the very beginning. The characters we well developed likable and relatable. The narration was top notch which is to be expected from Ray Porter. This was an unexpected treat for me. I don't usually go for the thriller horror type books but I'll be damned if this wasn't one of the best books I have ever listened to.

Ray rocks again...

Ray Porter always delivers a great performance. I personally don't prefer sci-fi, but enjoyed this through the end.

Pretty good book

A bit of a slow build up, but overall a good story. I got pulled out of the story a little at the reveal of what was in apartment 14, kind of farfetched, but story moved past it and I enjoyed it. Narrator great at differentiating voices of characters.

Slow start, reads like a movie script

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I definitely wanted to know what happened next--but a lot of the time I spent listening, I was just waiting to hear what was going to happen, rather than enjoying what I was actually hearing, if that makes sense. The beginning was very slow but the mystery was worthwhile. I would say the entire first half was plodding, but then it picked up speed quite quickly--and then it became almost too wild!

If you’ve listened to books by Peter Clines before, how does this one compare?

Never listened to any others.

Which scene was your favorite?

**SMALL SPOILER ONLY**
I very much liked the middle part, when the crew was exploring the underground realms of the Kavatch building. Once the villain was revealed and the story took an unexpected turn, I found the final 2-3 hours to be a bit unbelievable and far-fetched, even for a sci-fi novel.

Do you think 14 needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

I think it concluded well with no real need for followup. Satisfying ending.

Any additional comments?

I do feel that this book is BEGGING to be a movie. There is so much description of buildings, and landscapes, and action scenes that involve so much detail--it was hard to follow just by listening, and I really wanted a visual to help me keep things straight. I think with some tightening up this could be a really fun movie :-)

Pretty good story

Pretty good listen. Ray Porter is great as the narrator. ( had to get use to the thought that he wasn't Joe Ledger)

Don't let page one fool you.... A+

This is for all the Sci-Fi lovers and conspiracy theorists. The narrator starts off a little stiff on the first couple of pages and it had me worried. But soon he relaxed into the character, the character relaxed into the story and the story unfolded. And what a story it is - full of surprises, ideas, and good old fashioned science fiction.

I loved it and might just start it over in case I missed something.....

great listen

Any additional comments?

It was interesting and easy to listen to. Even if this "genera" hadn't been my thing I would still have enjoyed the book. I'd suggest giving it a try. If you hate it you can return it, and if you like it you have had the pleasure of a very unique listen!
