Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Thoroughly Original and Riveting

What did you love best about 14?

The story was completely original and surprising. It was fast-paced and suspenseful, with a fun cast of characters and a riveting plot worthy of The Twilight Zone. I was expecting something more like the traditional haunted house, but what I got was an unusual blend of the fantastic, horror and sc-if. I'd love to see this as a film! I've recommended it to others.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character was Nate, the lead. He was just an ordinary guy drawn into this crazy situation in his apartment building, and he couldn't let it go... He just had to get to the bottom of it. He behaved exactly as I would have behaved.

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

He got the tone just right. It felt as though he was telling a story and not just reading to hear his own voice, if you know what I mean.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I didn't cry, but I did laug... More often I found myself talking to the characters, as in "Hurry...hurry!" Or "Get out of there!" It was fun like that.

Any additional comments?

I can't imagine anyone not being blown away by this thoroughly original book. I will be looking for more from this author.

Good stories as this are hard to find

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, and already did.

What was one of the most memorable moments of 14?

Now, if I told you that, I would spoil the fun, wouldn't I?

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

Ray Porter is a brilliant narrator that could make you see the scenes and visualize everything written in the book as if you've watched it as a movie.
A very important part of my audible experience was the talent of Mr Porter.

Any additional comments?

A completely unexpected story line. I could never anticipate what will happen next.
A whole lot of puzzle pieces that slowly come together, but unlike a regular jigsaw puzzle, you never have the chance to take a glimps at the picture until it's completely solved and then you figure it out like a kick in the stomach!

I had to give it only 4 stars because of some small unsolved issues such as the riddle of room 16 (I don't want to make any spoilers), the big machine room on the roof, and the mystery of the black light.
It left me with some questions that had no answers, but other than that - a must listen to any thrill seekers!

Oddly fascinating!

Not my normal kind of book and I found myself drawn in and unable to get out until I finished because I had to find out what happened next! To me that is the way a good book has to be! Very well done!

Should be made into a film!!!

If you could sum up 14 in three words, what would they be?

Secrets, Scooby-Doo, Purposes

Who was your favorite character and why?

The whole cast of characters in this book are great! I couldn't narrow it down to just one person.

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

How every character has a uniqueness and a realism to them.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

A roof top discussion over cold beer between a younger man and an older man...

Any additional comments?

I will never look at any building the same way again!

SCREENWRITERS, HERE'S YOUR NEXT BLOCKBUSTER

This was a terrific novel! It would definately make an awesome movie! Great character building and superior suspense. Very skilled narrator. I could visualize every character. The accents were amazing but the "squale's" voice was OUTSTANDING! This is WORTH THE CREDIT!

Well crafted story, with an unexpected end. This would make a great movie script. Good light entertainment.

Should have bought it sooner!

I had been looking at this book for a long time, but the synopsis didn't really grab my interest. It wasn't until someone compared it to "Lost" (which i loved) that I decided to give it a shot.

I'm glad I did. It started off slow, but I like the buildup and the weirdness. It was a really good story and I ending up really loving the book.
