Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Didn't see it coming!

Maybe I should have with the glowing green bugs, but I didn't see this one coming. The story pulled me in right away, although the ending was a little far fetched. Overall, still a good book. Ray Porter does an excellent job narrating. Seriously, he has a different voice for each character. I don't know how he does it. Very talented indeed. I might have lost interest if not for his narration.

A VERY DIFFERENT (and great fun) story indeed!

The story premise about a young man working at a dull, tedious, low paying job does not sound interesting on the surface. He moves into an old apartment house where there is a cast of many different characters. S-L-O-W-L-Y little oddities bring many of the people together to solve their questions. Before you know it, you can't put the book down, its "just one more chapter" after the next. There are some real twists in the story so I couldn't predict the storyline in advance- a big plus to me. This is not a formulaic book. It is a story different than what you expect and it is addicting. I really recommend this book!
PS The narrator was very good too.

More Fun than Expected

A few pages in, I thought the plot of this book a little far-fetched and silly. But it was actually quite inventive and entertaining. If you love mysterious rooms and tunnels, things hidden in walls and odd phenomena, then you'll probably enjoy this book, too. The characters are quirky and the crazy plot twists are humorous. All and all a light and fun story.

So good the sci-fi sneaks up on you!

Would you consider the audio edition of 14 to be better than the print version?

Definately, you just cant get the depth of the charachters until they come to life by audio. The cadence, the timbre, the personality, the emotions, they are all portrayed best by performance artists such as these talented narrarators.

What was one of the most memorable moments of 14?

While all the action is spectacuarly captured at the end, I most love charachter development in the beginning where we get to know each person in the story. But my favorite scenes are all the charachters simply getting to know each other on the rooftops, having a drink and enjoying the setting sun. Its something I can completely relate to and do with my friends currently. So while I love the action in the end, I really love the down time captured by the charachters.

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

His ability to capture the personalities, their personalities with just his voice.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Easily I could have, but that would have simply been cheating myself out of savoring the moment. I could have listened in 1 day. But like a good bar of dark chocolate, nibbles of intense goodness an hour or two at a time is best.

Any additional comments?

I loved this book so much I looked the author up on Facebook and told him I enjoyed his book and he totally messaged me back within 15 minutes of my post! How about that? An approachable author! Good just got better!

I NEED MORE

Very good read. I love the characters, but the ending left me wanting more. Mr Clines let's go for a sequel and see what is behind the next door.

Nice change of pace story.

First book I have read from this author. I will be looking at other books from him. The plot is interesting and keeps your interest. Some of the humor injected into tragic or stressful situations could have been held back as it wasn't really needed. Would recommend to any scifi fans.

A fun ride well performed

With audiobooks, it's not just enough to have a good performance or to have a good story. You have to have both; kind of like with the film. It seems even more important with an audiobook since all of the imagery is still left to your own imagination.

Peter Clines' 14 as read by Ray Porter brings the goods on both spectrums: an imaginative story that keep you hooked and guessing, read by a gifted voice. Yes, there may have been a few times when Ray Porter blended some of the characters' voices, and yes there may have been a time or two when the story seemed a little off. But those were just little things that overall do not distract from the larger fact that this is fantastic entertainment and much more enjoyable than many a movie, book, or album.

Excellent!!!

Rarely have I listened to a book that checks all the boxes.
Just enough background information on characters without straying from the plot.
Great plot.
Mystery.
Surprise twists.
I highly recommend this listen !

Really enjoyed this book, kept me engaged the plot

Great characters, story that moved along in unexpected directions. Ending was good. Peter Clines created a new world that is plausible.
