Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Phenomenal

I wasn't sure that I was going to like this book from the description, but was sick of the sword and sorcery stuff and took a leap. Glad I did. The book builds slowly but keeps you interested and takes a lot of twists and turns along the way. The narrator does an excellent job of keeping his characters straight and has the right tone for the book.

A must listen.

Great story and very well performed in this Audible book. You can't go wrong with this enthralling tale.

Lighthearted Lovecraftian Tale

I was in love with a couple of the characters and the mystery of this book. Veek, Nate, Tim, and Zela are life. I'd jump on the whole series if it was just about them and their adventures as a Scooby Gang.
I liked the subtle humor and the horror themes. I was disappointed by the Lovecraftian monster but I enjoyed the references to historical people to give the world some creedence.
It's a solid 4 stars. It would have been five if the monsters weren't so predictable.

Great listen

I really enjoyed this story. I would love to hear the next one, but not sure why Audible won’t let me get it.

I really liked this one

It got off to a slow start, but then hooked me. The story made some pretty big leaps, but for me it worked.

Quirky, weird, and lots of fun!

What made the experience of listening to 14 the most enjoyable?

Characters were realistic and it was fun to experience the friendships being formed as the story progressed. There were also a lot of good one-liners and some humor in the story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Tim and Nat. Tim because at some point you figured out he wasn't a book publisher and Nat because he was a great "any man" character and me, along with many people I'm sure, could certainly relate to his boring job.

Which scene was your favorite?

The first two thirds of the book were really good and mysterious as they tried to figure out what the building was all about. The last part was fun but got a little too hard to believe.

Silly but a really fun ride!

Where does 14 rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's hard for me to rank it among all my listens, but I enjoyed it a good deal

What did you like best about this story?

It was quite suspenseful, so much so that during a tense part, my cat jumped onto the table and I jumped about six feet.

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

Porter did an excellent job with the narration. I thought his reading of the Indian girl's accent would get tiresome, but it didn't. It was easy to distinguish among the male characters with the different voices he did, and the foreign accents were very well done.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! I couldn't stop listening!

Any additional comments?

This is not great literature by any means, but if you want a good suspense thriller, I highly recommend it. It's a combination horror/thriller/sci-fi genre, and if I had known the sci-fi angle I would probably have skipped it, but I'm so glad I didn't. Great listen for the beach or a long drive; the story kept me very much engaged and on the edge of my seat.

A fun Roller Coaster

Any additional comments?

I suppose if you constantly read the sci-fi genre this book could be considered predictable. However as a newcomer or occasional dabbler in the sci-fi game it keeps the reader on seat’s edge. I agree that the character development was lengthy, but worth it as you grow to care about the whole cast once the action begins. The mystery unfolded like your backyard woods did as a child. It was a fun read, had to stay up late to finish because I was so invested in the outcome.
