Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

I loved the characters and the sci-fi element's! Really great descriptive sorry telling. I could see the old building and be creeped out with the characters at all the strange happenings.

REALLY GOOD!!!

This is not normally the type of book I would read. However, I had some audible credits to use and this one had decent reviews, so why not? I'm so glad I took a chance on it. It kept me interested from start to finish. The characters, the plot (which is out there), and the narrator were all awesome. Let me say though, that I'm not sure if this book would have packed the same punch for me if I would have only read it. The narrator, Ray Porter really brings it to life. A very fun and entertaining book!

Lovecraft for a contemporary listener

I wouldn't claim to be an expert in Lovecraft, but I have read a decent chunk of his stories. Peter Clines managed to construct a very well paced story with vibes and a universe extremely reminiscent of Lovecraft. Many Lovecraft fans would note that there are striking similarities and a much loved absence of of the worse point of Lovecraft. Effective the vibe is a very realistic world that hides dire secrets, forgotten people, and rats in the walls.

Fabulous!

The first thing you need to know is that I am not usually a fan of Sci-Fi. In fact, probably the only sci-fi I have ever enjoyed was Star Wars, and that's because it was something I did with my siblings. I have tried reading other sci-fi books and watching sci-fi movies, but never really could get into them. But this book was freaking AWESOME! It had me hooked from the very beginning, and didn't let go until the last page! I even spent my lunch breaks just sitting in my car so I could get in a few more chapters. My son was dying for me to finish so he could listen to it, and has already started. He is hooked as well! I can't wait to continue with this author, as he has opened a whole new world for me!
