Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

The Mystery Is Great, the Truth is Insanely Cool

What did you love best about 14?

Without spoiling this for anyone reading my review while trying to decide if they should purchase this book...I loved the unfolding of the mystery. It's innovative, it's bizarre, and it has layers upon layers that are absolutely thrilling.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I didn't have a favorite character, but that's just because the ensemble was so strong.

Have you listened to any of Ray Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I listened to Ray Porter's narration of The Fold and that was divine. I didn't realize it was the same narrator until a few minutes in, and then I was very pleased. This book is really great. Porter does a great job narrating different women and different men. They don't all sound the same and none of them sound like cartoons.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Completely entertaining

Would you listen to 14 again? Why?

I will definitely be listening to this one again. Compelling characters that you can get behind and root for. An adventure grounded in a well thought out plot that had me hooked right from the beginning.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Written from Nate Tucker's perspective, it's hard not to choose him as my favorite. I could easily substitute myself for him in the story.

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

I would listen to Ray Porter read a shopping list. I love his style and he's what actually brought me to choose this novel initially.

Any additional comments?

This book sucks you in with a slow burning mystery, revealing just enough to keep you moving along at a nice pace. Thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end, I can't recommend this book enough.

Author and Narrator combo fantastic

I really enjoyed this book. The author has created full characters from different walks of life that compliment each other nicely. Their quirky habits and talents bring them to life. The descriptions provided for each scene allowed my brain to complete the image like I was wagching it on a screen. In saying that, id love to see this on screen.
The narrator absolutely nail's the voices. I partly chose this book because of the narrator.
Just read / listen to it.

Love it!

I really enjoyed this book. It starts out as “just a normal day in the life of” and then gets progressively creepier. The characters are fun and kept me laughing out loud through the book. If there was such a thing as an “urban science fantasy” book genre I would put this book in it, because it’s not a super heavy techno-babble kind of book. That being said it has the most original apocalyptic scenario I have ever read.

***tiny spoiler—I love the idea of a psychic precipice for mankind! Genius!!

New favorite

This book has taken its rightful place amongst the small collection I call "My Favorite Books."
An absolute must for fans of Lovecraftian horror.
Ray Porters performance was impeccable, and really made the story come to life. This book is better as an audiobook because he did such an amazing job.

Amazing fun story to enter into!

I loved almost everything about this! The mix of feelings and genres was perfection! As someone who loves anything mysterious and hidden... a person who would investigate any suspicious door with a lock on it... this book kept me hooked and i wished I could be in that position of the main characters (seriously... I'm a "what's hidden behind the wall?!" Kind of freak). But then with the intermingling of real-life possibilities mixed with the sci-fi and just all in between, it made a fun read. Not too heavy that it'd affect my mood, but just right where I could leave it running all day and still be interested.
