Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Excellent Writer

Would you listen to 14 again? Why?

yes; so well written.

What other book might you compare 14 to and why?

I'm not usually a sci-fi reader so none. That's another reason I am surprised at how much i liked it.

Which character – as performed by Ray Porter – was your favorite?

ALL of them. He's magnificent.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

LOL... I can't sit still that long. NO book do I want to listen to in one sitting!

A Fun Ride

I quite enjoyed "14." For a long time, I was drawn to dystopian books, but lately I have been loving the genre best described as I'm-not-sure-what's-going-on-but-it-will-be-fun-to-find-out. Peter Clines writes these type of books with a science fiction twist.

I found "14" to be more unputdownable than "The Fold," but that may be because I listened to the audiobook version of "14." Ray Porter portrays the different characters fantastically.

There are a few things left unexplained at the end of "14," and although that may have driven me nuts in some cases, I did not mind it here. I liked how the novel resolved, and I look forward to reading more of Cline's work. Porter also narrates the audio version of "Paradox Bound," so I'm sure it will not disappoint!

"You have to expect some weirdness, y'know?"

What do the end of the world and an old apartment building in Los Angeles have in common? At first glance, not much, but in Peter Clines' meandering tale, you pick up speed and are taken to places you wouldn't imagine! I loved this audio book. You can't get better than Ray Porter as a narrator and he really brought 14 to life. I cared about the people in the KAVACH building and there were even a few tense, heart pounding moments that left me sitting in my car to find out what happened.

I was hesitant to get this book because of some of the reviews, but am glad I took the plunge. I also bought the Kindle print version because I enjoyed it so much.

There weren't important unanswered questions in my opinion and I felt it was wrapped up in a tidy little package. I'd love a sequel just to get more of these great characters. Give this one a try, you won't be disappointed.

Great

I loved the whole mystery behind the whole building, it's not just room 14 BTW. I don't think that's a spoiler. The mystery just wrapped around my head and I couldn't stop guessing what else was going to happen. It just keeps getting weirder and weirder. However, I do hate open ended endings, which a lot of people do, this one has one.

Humor, Sci-Fi and Dimensional Worlds

Good narration. I liked the characters' sense of humors! The sci-fi 'religious' cult was a far stretch, but different for sure. The character interaction has a great flow to it. Overall, a pleasure to listen to through audible.

GREAT STORY

I was not immediately happy with this story. It was a slow start but when it progressed, I was hooked. I have not read another book that was as imaginative as this. It is science fiction, but has good character development. It doesn't overload the story with science facts; just tells the story with a nice bit of humor. I enjoyed it thourghly.

It keeps you wondering...

What happens next? Could it get any more weird? Very good book and makes me want to read more!

Top shelf SF

Really well done in all areas. Clines is right up there with the best SF writers and the narration was spot on.

One of my favorite summer reads

I really enjoyed it - so much so that I've listened to it on the beach, mowing the grass, etc... 2-3 times all the way thru. His writing style is easy to follow and he writes the apartment living very well. The twist halfway thru the book might turn you off (it goes from a buddy movie to a sci-fi in a matter of minutes) but the sci-fi is portion is easy to digest and doesn't go too far off the deep end. I would strongly suggest reading his other novels as well - maybe not the super hero stuff unless you are totally into that kind of stuff, but his other stuff is very solid. Overall, one of my favorites to listen to while busy.
