Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Sounds like most didnt know it was a Sci-Fi Myster

I decided to read the reviews after I finished the book. I, like most, chose this title based upon its 4.3 rating and over 38K reviews. I was kind of surprised at all of the negative reviews...most complaining at the turn of events the story took. It makes me think, did these reviewers even see that it was a SCI-FI Mystery? Surely they wouldn't have been as surprised if they knew.

At any rate, I did enjoy the book. It is like riding an old wooden roller coaster with a slow ride to the top and then all of the sudden you are screaming at 75 MPH through the rest of the ride. You can nit-pick here and there, but in the end I was still glad I bought and listened to it.

Unanswered questions keep coming

What did you love best about 14?

It's an intriguing puzzle that keeps delivering new twists and turns. Each new discovery raises more questions, though the author ultimately builds a compelling "mythology" and moves to an action-packed conclusion.

What other book might you compare 14 to and why?

It's a little like the TV series "Lost" and a little like Dean Koontz the way it offers a big and seemingly impossible puzzle for characters to solve.

Have you listened to any of Ray Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I had not, but he does a great job with many characters here.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, it's too long for that, but it would be great for a long drive to be sure.

Any additional comments?

An excellent overall book that's really worth a listen if you have an appreciation for horror and science fiction.

Gripping & fun... but couldn't sustain

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I enjoyed 85% of this book. The narration was outstanding. Porter clearly defined the characters without overdoing and straying into theatrical performance. I was very impressed & performance is what held the whole work together for me.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listened to this over several weeks as I ran. I was very much glued to it until the end, which played out in a surprising way that, to me, stretched the story too far.

Any additional comments?

I hope this gets made into a movie. It really was great. The story just went places that I was not prepared to go.

Ray Porter's reading made listening a real pleasure.

Twisted plot. Weird characters. Wild.

I Was Sad it was Over!

What a great story! It was gripping and addictive from the very beginning. And the narrator Ray Porter did a fantastic job as well.

Awesome "Fringiness!"

I loved this audio book by Peter Clines. This author is now one of my favorites of this genre. His characters are so well drawn out that you find yourself caught up in their lives and anxious to know what will happen next. I think my favorite in this book is Tim but it's hard to choose just one. The story itself is rich and has so many facets that you get pulled into the mystery almost immediately. I personally loved all of the historical aspects mixed with the fringe science stuff, though I won't reveal too much about the plot. No spoilers here. It's a fairly long book by my standards, at 81 chapters, but I was never bored for one second. Shout out to the guy that does the reading for this book...he's great! Can't wait to get another of Cline's books.

fun and mysterious listen!

Peter Clines is serious about his worlds ending. This book is what Chris Matthews is constantly calling everyone on The Bachelor/Bachelorette – a “fan favorite”. I discovered 14 by looking at reviews of another book on Audible, and someone had posted “This book is great but if you have to pick one book right now get 14! Get this one later!” The urgency convinced me. 14 is a creative apocalyptic-mystery/House of Usher/fun house at the carnival type read, very outside the box. A sort of steampunk-ish Clue game of our world’s end. One thing I think is really funny, another author gave this book a blurb that says ”A riveting apocalyptic mystery in the style of LOST.” The TV show? I think this book has more in common with… books.
