Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

"A wholly original story that weaves together mystery and the apocalypse like a finely tuned band." (Evan Roy, Bricks of the Dead)

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Innovative storyline

I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy a slice of life with a supernatural twist story. The explanations of things are very imaginative.

Highly recommend

I loved this book. The story and characters really drew me in, and I could not wait to find out what happened next. The premise of the book with an old building with many secrets led to a story with many mysteries for the characters to unravel. The narrator did a great job. #Clever #Mysterious #Suspenseful #LosAngeles #OtherWorlds #tagsgiving #sweepstakes

Lovecraft meets Scooby and Dilbert

This is one of my favorite Audible stories. I have actually listened to it multiple times. I think it requires someone who likes science fiction plus mystery combined with an element of horror thrown in. Often funny, always intriguing, kept me thoroughly entertained.

If the rest of his books are this good...

I'll be adding Peter Clines to my 'must read' list. This book is gripping start to finish.

Transcends Reality

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Even though I am not a big fan of science fiction this book is so well constructed and performed, that I would recommend it to anyone. I found myself at first thinking that the plot was totally outrageous and entirely unbelievable, but in the end I just admired the book for the shear imagination of the author.

Ray Porter gave one of the best performances to which I have ever listened.

Slow to Build but a Thundering Conclusion

This was a really interesting book. It starts out quite slow, and for a while I was wondering if I had mistakenly bought a book that was not science fiction. However, it is well worth persisting as the mystery unfolds. This story has some very interesting characters, and builds to a fantastic conclusion. I won't spoil it, but any book which has Telsa and Chthulhu is worth a listen! Ray Porter does a good job of narration.

I Seldom Rave........but I won't blather much.

If you could sum up 14 in three words, what would they be?

Unpredictable, Ravenous, Satiating.

What was one of the most memorable moments of 14?

Learning that the building was not on the grid, and that the buildings power was coming from another source.

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

Commitment to character and personality.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, the best books should eek themselves out little by little. Don't be in such a hurry. Anticipation is the best slice of life.

Good book worth the credit

This was a great book that II grab this block when it was on sale for like seven dollars and I had heard of this author because of a book of short stories that he put out that I thought was really good. This seemed like the most interesting book that he had out of everything he’s done so far and I really wish that he would make another one like this or a sequel to this.
