Publisher's summary

Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Sci-fi for the non-sci-fires

This was a bit like an early Stephen King novel... The pack of misfits who have all the necessary skills. Very hard to put aside. More suspense and action than character development. But certainly a good enough story to make me want to read his next book.

LOVED this book

So after reading the summary, I was torn about using a credit on this book. I decided to give it a chance after reading a lot of the other reviews and I’m so glad I did. I immediately fell in love with all the characters and the story was uniquely entertaining. You won’t be disappointed!

As for the narrator... I would find listening to Ray Porter read the telephone book riveting, so you definitely won’t get any complaints about his performance from me. I love how he has an unique voice for each character and preforms all of them flawlessly.

It was fine

This book started out great...a good mystery. But as it got cooking the plot turned to familiar tenets...boy meets girls...a match for everyone and stereotypical characters.

A really fun ride

Overall score should really be about 4.5. The story itself was probably a 4 but the presentation and unfolding of the story was deserving of a 5.

Had a good cast of characters and, as stated previously, it was extremely entertaining watching the characters delve deeper into the weirdness around them.

The narrator can totally make or break the listening experience and Ray Porter was definitely a plus. Did a good job of making it easy to distinguish the characters and did a good job of changing the pacing/tone of his reading to match the situations.

Fun book!

Awesome story

Who was your favorite character and why?

Tim was my favorite because he was as mysterious and strong as the story line was.

What does Ray Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His voice changes per character were great and you could tell the differences of whom was talking.

The House With a Secret...

Would you consider the audio edition of 14 to be better than the print version?

Definitely, you need to hear the the different characters.

What other book might you compare 14 to and why?

I don't know, I usually don't read sci-first.

Which character – as performed by Ray Porter – was your favorite?

Veek

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did

Any additional comments?

Ray Porter did an amazing job with the different voices. There were so many and he carried them out. KUDOS-to you Mr. Porter. Plus, I'm not really into sci-fi, but this book was a welcome relief, because, it was one of those books where the author didn't take himself too seriously. I loved it!
