Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Narration was excellent made the story extremely compelling. I had never heard of Peter Cline before but the story unfolds in a unique way. Loved it will consider downloading more books by Peter and narrated by Ray Porter.

A Great Story From Clines

Have you listened to any of Ray Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I enjoy listening to Ray Porter. It took me a while to distance myself from his performance in "The Joe Ledger Novels."

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

**Spoiler** When the old lady died. It would have been a terrifying way to go.

Good thriller

Usually not into sci-fi stories, but this one is darn good! The narrator was great.

I have listened to this book over 14 times!

What did you love best about 14?

I love this audiobook. Ray Porter is an amazing talent, and brings the characters to life. This audiobook reminds me of the old radio plays I listened to growing up. Engrossing, thrilling, and awesome characters in a mysterious & horrifying setting. I look forward to the 15th time listening again!

What other book might you compare 14 to and why?

The Fold. It's the 2nd book in this series. Not quite as good at 14, but once you're hooked, you're hooked!

Have you listened to any of Ray Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is some of this very best work.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

YES! Be careful. You will be addicted!

Many mysteries and dark reality

I liked all the mystery and twists of this story. I did not however enjoy the revealed reality.
In all the story is full of gripping drama & mystery and well performed.

Tesla, Lovecraft, and Squales! Oh my!

What do Tesla, Lovecraft, a doomsday cult and an inter-dimensional traveling historic apartment building in the Hollywood hills have in common? They're all what makes up the book of 14. Fantastic story, outstanding narration, and a wonderful collection of witty characters. I enjoyed every single minute. Sequel ? I hope so!

Enjoyable story with excellent narration

I chose this book because I love Ray Porter's narration, and I had enjoyed Peter Clines' "Paradox Bound". I found "14" to be a better all around story than Paradox, and the characters were really likable (or appropriately dislikable, in some cases). In retrospect, I'm tempted to categorize this book as "good clean fun" -- because Clines does such a good job of stirring intrigue and excitement without vulgarity or cynicism. Thats not to say that you won't find a splash of sex and violence in this book -- you will -- but it isn't gratuitous and it enhances the story rather than violating it.

It probably goes without saying that the narration was superb. Ray Porter is an Audible god, and I believe I'd be happy to listen to him reading ingredient lists off cereal boxes. His voice and characterizations brought Clines' characters to life -- with humor and depth. Just wonderful!

If you do decide to read "14" (and I think you should!) make time afterward to read "The Fold", also by Peter Clines. They're companions. You'll see what I mean.
