Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

"A wholly original story that weaves together mystery and the apocalypse like a finely tuned band." (Evan Roy, Bricks of the Dead)

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Loved it!

I loved this book! Only didn't give it 5 stars because of some predictability. If I could have I would give it 4 3/4 stars!

Slow Starter

It was slow to start but picked up speed middle to end. I was looking for something to grab me but that didnt really happen till almost the end. I would say it is one to read if you are a patient reader, certainly not a page turner. The performance was excellent, loved that part.

Good Story, Not At All What I Expected

I've read a lot of reviews on this and had it in my wish list for quite a while. I went into it expecting a nice thriller/mystery type story and ended up with a horror story.

All in all it was pretty good. There was a lot of the SciFi parts that were a stretch and most of the characters were pretty typical. It's funny that the use Scooby Doo characters as references since the author keeps his characters lined out just about like a cartoon.

It was an entertaining listen and worth your time for a unique and entertaining story. Don't expect to get your mind blown, but you can expect to be entertained.

Interesting plot but lots of unresolved details

I liked this book but didn't think that everything was neatly tied up in the end. To me, there were many unexplained phenomena that just hung there unresolved. I'd like to see what Murakami could have done with this story. It held my interest but aside from the lack of resolution, the writing was a bit flat - the characters "nodded" and "shook their heads" way too much; surely there's a better way to convey assent or dissent than to use these terms ad nauseam.

Adventures in a mysterious building

Would you consider the audio edition of 14 to be better than the print version?

Yes. Each character has personality.I can feel from the narrator.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Nate. He has curiosity and leadership. I like him. His relation with Veek is natural.

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

Strange mystery. The story developed with conversation.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Is there a mysterious building other than this?

Not even finished & hooked!

Would you consider the audio edition of 14 to be better than the print version?

didn't read the print.

What other book might you compare 14 to and why?

the only other one is John Grisham's The Confession (awesome awesome listen). It's got a good solid believable story line and makes you think you have it figured out, but then you really don't.

What does Ray Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Great narration and voice/accent differences.

Any additional comments?

I was needing a book with an actual story line and that required me to actually listen and not know the outcome before I had even heard the book. After the Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy, Bared to You, the Mckenzie brothers & Tempted (which all were good books with the exception or Tempted), I needed a story with substance. I have to admit I was skeptical and only used a credit b/c other reviewers were loving this story. OH MY STARS! I am so addicted to this story. It had me hooked at Chapter 1. I love all the characters and the narrator does a really good job with the characters voices/accents. Like I said I was hooked at chapter 1 and I'm not big on mysteries, but this one is so good. I didn't need to wait for chapter 7 or 10 for the book to pick up and start gaining my interest. If your doubting yourself this is a must listen. Go ahead use that credit, it's so worth it.

Interesting, but could be better.

Would you try another book from Peter Clines and/or Ray Porter?

Maybe.

What other book might you compare 14 to and why?

I don't read a lot of books like this, but it reminded me of the TV show Lost.

Was 14 worth the listening time?

Yes

Any additional comments?

This book was entertaining, but could have been better. The story was interesting enough to keep me listening, but I think the characters were lacking. The characters are not the most intelligent people and the dialogue is very basic - it sounds like it could be written for young adults. The book could have been much richer and more complex if the characters and dialogue were also. But, as I said, an interesting story and compelling enough to listen through the end.

Mystery With A Side of SciFi

If you could sum up 14 in three words, what would they be?

A 'page turner'! Great suspense and twists!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Vig. Dry humor; hilarious.

Have you listened to any of Ray Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Nope!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. I like them long and involved.

Any additional comments?

Will definitely check out this author again!

A fun summer read!

This was recommended to me by a friend as a fun summer read, and she was right! Fast-paced, a little weird (a compliment from me), but not too deep. The reader was pretty good and switched between characters well enough.

Blow your mind!

This book is really good. I had a hell of a time trying to figure out where it was leading and every time I was wrong.
