Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Nate shrugged

Imagine if the people who wrote Lost had known where they were going with it from day one and you hadn't quit somewhere in the middle out of frustration at the deliberately coy overwrought narrative and when you finally read the synopsis in Wikipedia, the ending hadn't sucked. You just imagined 14.
So this was easily one of the most riveting books I have read in recent memory.
The characters were interesting and likable. The story was fascinating and well paced. I usually listen to audiobooks on the drive to work but with 14 I would have trouble peeling myself out of the car when I arrived at my destination.
The voice talent for the audiobook was also spot on. Both Peter Cline and Ray Porter man their posts with skill and pull you in to the narrative.
My one quibble was the abundance of shrugging (you'll see what I mean). The author could have just noted in the prologue that the reader should imagine the characters shrugging at all time.

Loved it!!!

This book was a really good mix of mystery, suspense, horror and humor. The plot twist is in the middle of the book so you get to follow it instead of the book just ending. The narrator is also very good. Highly recommended!

GREAT STORY!!! Leaves you wanting more

I came across this Novel by sheer chance, and I am so glad I did. The Narrator Ray Porter brings the Story to life sucks you into the story. Author Peter Clines, is now on my radar, and I hope(finger crossed) many more books to come in the series. Great book and Great Listen. I recommend to anyone who like a bit of history with their mystery.

OK Book, Excellent Narrator

Would you recommend 14 to your friends? Why or why not?

Probably not, but I would recommend the narrator. The story travelled so well in the beginning and the characters were developing well, but then I feel the story didn't hold up so well in the end. I did read this on the recommendation of other readers and I can understand why they liked it, but for me, it was no surprise and it felt as though I'd read or heard the story before (I never watched Lost so there was no comparison there).

What does Ray Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Every character was distinguishable and that is an experience in itself. Well done Mr Porter.

Pulls you in from the start

This has been one of the best books I've listened to in years. Characters are wonderful and the dialogue is well written and extremely entertaining. There is a great balance between humour and suspense, and the underlying plots help the story move along to the point you don't want it to end.

Good read too much detail though

I liked the book but there was way too much detail. I do think it was worth listening too though.

Amazing! Couldn't put it down!

Would you consider the audio edition of 14 to be better than the print version?

I hadn't read the print version, but the audio was amazing. I felt like I was in the story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of 14?

I liked it when they first started finding the clues in each apartment and starting collaborating to link them all together.

Which scene was your favorite?

When they opened the door to room 14.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Sometimes secrets are better left alone.

Any additional comments?

This book was amazing from cover to finish. The narrator couldn't have been a better pick. He was so talented with the way he could switch to all the different character voices and he gave everyone a personality that you could really feel come to life. This book had it all ,mystery, suspense, sci-fi, love, and some history even thrown in there. There was absolutely never a dull moment and I found myself not being able to stop listening. There are so many secrets and so many twists and turns and each page takes you farther and farther down the rabbit hole. This is a book you do not want to miss!

Surprised

Would you consider the audio edition of 14 to be better than the print version?

I have never read the print version

What other book might you compare 14 to and why?

Wow, I couldn't compare it to any other book. It's the first of it's kind I've read....

What does Ray Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I actually thought he did a great job with the voices - some I even forgot it was him doing the voices... was really good

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I loved how real historical people were brought into the storyline when the people in the story were researching the building

Any additional comments?

This is one book that I will be promoting everyone read. It's up there in my top 10 list. Loved it

Action and Sci Fi meets

I am a action thriller kind of reader. This book was interesting and different with a dose if Science Fiction rolled into it.
