Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Exciting an unpredictable!

I enjoyed this book so much. I could not stop listening and even was late for work because I couldn't wait to see what was going to haoppen next. The narrator was great and was able to portray the characters so effectively. If you like mysteries you won't be disapointed with this book.

14=Stephen King

Where does 14 rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

14 masterfully takes the commonplace to a new place, imbuing the everyday with history and the supernatural.

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

Ray Porter changed voices, accents, and genders so well that I forgot it was a single reader narrating.

Any additional comments?

I thought I was listening to a Stephen King novel.

Great story

The best thing in my opinion, is that the characters are believable and relatable. You can identify with each of them. The author keeps the story moving at a steady pace right to the end. Great story and definitely worth checking out!

Fun sci-fi presented as a mystery

This book sucks you in with the mystery format in the first several chapters. The more that is discovered, the more you want to know. It delves into the world of science fiction through some basic theoretical science topics. There were a couple of science gaps left with no attempt to even explain (for example, what is behind the painted over door doesn't make sense at all, and a loose attempt at an explanation isn't even attempted). The final climactic chapters dive straight into fantasy, in a way that I wasn't thrilled about, but also didn't hate. The first 75% of the book gets an enthusiastic score of 10 out of 10 from me. The last 25% gets somewhere around a 7. The writing is still fun, but the topics/scientific "reasoning" gets a bit out there and feels a little thrown together.

Overall, fun book. The first 3/4 keeps you intrigued and glued to the book.

Excellent Mystery with a twist

I highly recommend this book if you love Mystery, SciFi, Steam / Cyber - punk and a bit of Horror, 14 has it all. Unexpected story! great characters, Peter Clines had me invested in all of them, even the minor ones. his description and the way he unfolded this story, including the details of the lives of everyone, was so believable. that coupled with the excellent Narration by Ray Porter who was able to give each character their own voice, (he is truly talented) kept everything straight and anticipating whatever happens next for me,. I had force myself to stop listening to get some sleep... It felt like I was truly there! bonus, being from the Scooby Doo generation I really enjoyed the references. more please...

So Close To Being a Great Book

This book was good but poor character and plot development got in the way of it being a great book. I don't want to sound too negative because I did enjoy the book in spite of these issues. There were at least 2 unnecessary characters which took away from developing the important characters and their relationships. There were not any glaring plot holes but there were some aspects of the plot that didn't make any sense and/or didn't get developed fully.
