Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

"A wholly original story that weaves together mystery and the apocalypse like a finely tuned band." (Evan Roy, Bricks of the Dead)

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Slow to start - but worth the effort

A bit of a surprise this one! Don't expect a sweeping mythology with a deep story. Strictly a modern reinterpretation of similar twilight stand alone stories from the past. However it is very well written and narrated. I highly recommend the story for a light bit of fun.

Needs a better ending

Where does 14 rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Towards the bottom

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending is the only reason why I am being so harsh on my review. I like the story at the beginning and the character development, but it felt short on the conclusion.

Cool story and acceptably creepy

What did you love best about 14?

Original take on an old story. I hope the author writes more - he is very talented at horror.

Under the Radar Find

Would you listen to 14 again? Why?

Better than anticipated since it was a sale book. The narration was strong and the secret is held just long enough that you don't get tired of waiting.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Nathan Turner is a surprisingly likeable character. He discovers that he is more than the slacker, going no where guy he thinks he is when the mysteries of his new apartment start to reveal themselves.

Which scene was your favorite?

It's a great surprise when you finally discover what the secrets of the building really are. Never saw that coming.

Yeah!

Takes the imagery of HP Lovecraft and mysterious science of Tesla, and combines it with Hollywood and some average? inhabitants. I laughed out loud. I will read and or listen to this book again.

An unusual story with familiar plots

Without giving away the story, it's quite good but does lend to some familiar plot twists which can be a little tiresome at the end. Bang, a shot then wait to see the effect. of course the targeted person survives and attacks again. bang and the person excapes. Jeez, just empty the clip in the subject, especially since he's responsible for your current life or death delima. Otherwise, a good book with, like I said, an unusual story line.

extremely original. hits all the points

the only reason I didn't finish it in a weekend was sleep. super original with an excellent performance from Ray Porter. As someone that's always looking for the deeper back story in old architecture, this story was extremely compelling. I want more from this universe.
