Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Fun book, original story

As usual, Ray Porter’s narration was outstanding. The plot was fun the whole book through, but it’s not really an edge of the chair book. The story seems pretty original and the characters are very well developed. I thoroughly enjoyed the performance.

One of the best audio books I have listened to.

What did you love best about 14?

The narration was awesome. Ray Porter has become one of my all time favorites. All his voices had distinct personalities and were totally believable. Even the women.

What other book might you compare 14 to and why?

I would compare 14 to the writings of Dean Koontz. In fact, I have several favorites of Koontz that Peter Clines is now in line with.

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

Pretty much everything. In fact, this is the first audio book that I couldn't get out of my mind because of his excellent reading and to which I turned around a week later and listened to the entire book again.

Fun

This was fun to listen to - I really liked all of the characters and could never quite figure out where the story was going or what was going to happen next, which is a rarity. There were times when it felt a little bit like Dean Koontz writing a Hardy Boys novel (but the book itself makes fun of itself doing that, which was also enjoyable). Just good fun all around.

very contemporary

If you could sum up 14 in three words, what would they be?

beginning a sags

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

dark side held to a separate dimension. Andrew is unbelievable, undeveloped

What does Ray Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

first time I've heard him. i thought he did a great job.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Falling into space through door 14

Any additional comments?

Could be continued in concurrent dimensions. not all good and evil but apartment dwellers visiting and less commando stuff. I don't like Rambo special ops figures or current love of the military.

Wow, just. Wow.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this a million times over. This story takes an entirely unexpected twist less than an hour in and keeps you guessing until the very end. The sudden switch from normal life to an apartment that actually is too good to be true is believable and manages to pick up the pace of the book nicely. If you're a fan of sci-fi this is a book you'll want to read. If you aren't a fan of sci-fi this book is a good introduction to the genre without having to make too big a leap from reality.

Out there, but in a good way!

This was my first listen to a Clines novel, downloaded solely on reading other reviews and liking Ray Porter as a narrator. It's not very deep and I never felt connected with a few of the characters but I was intrigued throughout the listen.

A great ride!

Great narration, easy to listen to, and action packed! It ran like a good comic book, with elements of comedy, sci-fi and horror.

Great book

Great listen. Well developed characters. Starts slow but good once it gets going. I just wish there was a little more on how things worked or a flashback

Good Fun

Where does 14 rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This was on of my enjoyable reads of late.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Nate. He finds himself by the end of the book.

What does Ray Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Ray Porter does a great job with the voices and accents.

Any additional comments?

This is a great book that keeps you wanting to listen to find out what is going to happen at the end. While a little bit formulaic at the end, it was a good listen and one of the recent books that kept me hooked until the end.
