Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Peter Clines at his best. Ray Porter was perfect. I’d like to request a sequel please.

Super fun listen

Great story! Also, Ray Porter is a great narrator! SPOILER... The one critique I have is in the naming of the villains toward the end... leviathan would have been less juvenile sounding.

What a FUN RIDE.

Such fun. So well written and narrated . I wanted to invite some of the characters here to spend the Holidays. They deserve some TLC after what they've been through.

This is my first foray outside of reading literature (sounds snobby , I know) and I had great fun going on a grand adventure.

If You Knew Cthulu, Like I knew....

If you could sum up 14 in three words, what would they be?

Intriguing, Imaginative, Spooky

What did you like best about this story?

It starts nice and normal, and quickly begins to take on that odd feeling and quirkiness- like the old "Magic Bookstore" theme of days gone by. The characters are well developed for the most part, and one gets inside their respective heads fairly quickly. The plot is fast paced and has interesting and enveloping ambiance.

Have you listened to any of Ray Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

My first with Ray. Good voice.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The key to 14 opens more than a door...

Any additional comments?

Fun romp! I'm looking at his other works as well as those of the voice actors.

Great Book, awesome plot and characters!

Firstly I want to say this was the second book of Peters that I listened to. The narrator was one of the best in my book. Lots of feeling and excitement!

The plot, characters and energy level were incredible. I was addicted to this book and found it very hard to put away. Most nights I stayed up 2 extra hours as I simply could not stay away.

As I read through (listened) the book, I tried to imagine what direction the storyline might go. The result was constant surprises that had me shaking my head in excitement. Not only is a good writer and storyteller, he has a gift when it comes to writing dialogue.

I HIGHLY recommend this book to those who like science fiction, horror and great creative writing.

quirky but fun book

Very interesting subject. This book kept you hooked and fed you enough information to keep you guessing. it's a little out there, but it's science fiction. I really enjoyed this book as a change of pace from your normal mystery or suspense.

Great, Twisted Fun

Go in knowing as little as possible. Going along for the ride as the mystery unfolds was excellent. I didn't realize until after I finished it that some people consider it to be a horror novel. I can see now why it's got that label, but to me it felt more like "The X Files" or "Fringe".

Enveloping

Once it got going, which was fairly quickly, I couldn't stop listening. Very well written for a wide range of readers and well performed for an equally large group of listeners. It's not a genre I typically pick up but I'm very glad to have listened to this book. I was curious how it would all tie together until the very end.

A Wild Ride

So this was certainly unusual, but in a good way. The author has a hell of an imagination. Honestly, the book was slow to start and there were times early on where it had a hard time keeping my attention. Also, in the beginning, the narrator's voice acting felt uncertain and artificial. As more characters were introduced, however, the voice acting felt more natural. There were all sorts of bizarre twists, and each one served to hook my attention more than before. By the midpoint, I was totally hooked! I was sad when it ended, because I had gotten to enjoy it so much. The ending felt a tiny bit anticlimactic, but it was a rewarding ending and did tie up the ends in a nice little bow. Very pleased overall and will look for more by this author and narrator.
