Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

I wish I could have edited this book

I would have really enjoyed this book more with some changes. Some just my preference in sci-fi I guess but bigger complaint with overuse of comic relief. The characters were making wise cracks that weren't that funny at really tense times and it took away from the moment.

Great author

Captivating story with a great set of characters. Clines knows how to write them. I am going to buy more of his books.

An Enjoyable Listen

A Lovecraftian horror novel clashes with the goofiness of Scooby Doo. One part spooky, one part heartfelt, one part corny - the story didn't go where I expected it to go, but I was entertained throughout.

The narrator does a great job and differentiating voices between the characters, and I never felt confused as to who was talking. I felt like the narrator spoke in a sort of matter-of-fact way often, very straightforward, which is a good match for the writing in the book itself.

UN-PUT-DOWN-ABLE

This book is a good one. Do not start this book if you have something you need to do! I was nearly obsessed with the book from the moment I started. I kept stopping, then bargaining in my mind: one more chapter...The story line is unique and flowed smoothly; I can't remember a boring moment. The narrator, who had a different voice and accent for everyone, was top-notch also. Get this book! Thank me later.

it was a very compelling and interesting story

I really enjoyed the story and kept listening with every free moment that I had. I did find the ending a bit rushed and kind of anticlimactic but overall I enjoyed it and would recommend it.

It's a story.

I let myself fall for the excellent cover art and checked the reviews to see some 40k reviewers gave it like 4 or 5 stars. I didn't love this book like I've loved others. I love sci-fi but felt the book was a bit messy. There are so, so many dead ends when I expect the story to expound or continue and explain a mystery. I didn't love the characters or find the book compelling to finish or continue listening to. It wasn't what I was expecting and I wasn't pleasantly surprised. I would say: It's a story. If you hate it, you try writing a better story. I didn't think it was amazing but it wasn't a waste of time either. Average. You might love it. Ray Porter makes the story excellent.

It’s not my style

I cannot connect to this story. It’s not my style. It’s a little bit more like a Halloween story.

Pretty good Lovecraftian mystery

Overall I enjoyed the book and it delivered on the Lovecraftian type story I was looking for. Narrator was very good with his distinct voices for all the characters. The third act was more on the weaker side for me and pretty predictable, with moments seemingly scripted perfectly for a scene in a movie. Regardless I would certainly recommend it.
