Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

What happened to the pet food

The book: It is a very good read. It does not explode until chapter 40+ but you do not get bored. It's really great. I love using audible because I can read while I am driving, swimming, exercising, or at work; and still accomplish other tasks.
The story: I was guessing the whole time. I never figured it out. It's clever and unique. It offers a lot of explanation but also lets you guess some things too. There is one point where Oscar goes to get pet food and returns but it's never mentioned upon his return. It seems to be a small overlook. Anyways. I loved it.
The reader: amazing. I love a female reader but Ray Porter hits the nail on the head. He kept my interest. I find it easier to not get distracted by a woman's voice. I have no clue why. Ray Porter uses accents and pitch and really sells each character. He is great. Looking to listen to more books by Ray.

Good Read.

A very engaging story. Well written and narrated. The only issue with it, for me at least, was that the information given was enough to allow the reader to correctly predict when and how the penny drops for the current mystery. Yet the author seems to underestimate the reader and continues with another 5 or more pages of unnecessary clues. When the truth is finally revealed, I was already certain of who it was or what it was. A good story that I think just ran past the perfect 'Reveal' points a few times.

Unique and Entertaining

The synopsis doesn’t do this yarn justice. But telling what type of tale this is would be a major spoiler soooo let’s just say if you’re into a certain genre you’re in for a brilliant surprise treat.
Ray Porter’s character voices are outstanding. Even minor characters that appear in only a couple of paragraphs get their own treatment and the transitions between voices - even ones with radically different accents - during conversations is flawless.

Fun and Entertaining SciFi

Would you consider the audio edition of 14 to be better than the print version?

I don't know. Haven't read the print, but the audio is well done.

What did you like best about this story?

The cooperation among the characters.

Which scene was your favorite?

Can't think of one in particular.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me laugh many times.

Any additional comments?

I found 14 to be very well written, interesting, and superbly narrated. I liked the interaction among the different characters and felt they were well developed. The story premise was believable and interesting, although the creatures encountered in an other dimension were formulaic to say the best about them. Why with all their creativity do so many writers think bugs are the only scary predators. The head predator is seriously frightening, however.

5 stars all around

My first Peter Klines book and I'm hooked. If you like fiction, thrillers, sci-fi and rich character development, this exceeds across the board. And it's funny with likable characters. Narration was spot on. Highly recommend.

I wish I could have edited this book

I would have really enjoyed this book more with some changes. Some just my preference in sci-fi I guess but bigger complaint with overuse of comic relief. The characters were making wise cracks that weren't that funny at really tense times and it took away from the moment.
