Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

A Fun Listen!

Any additional comments?

If you kind of like Stephen King & H.P. Lovecraft, but find them either a bit boring or obscure, then I can highly recommend "14". The first 3/4 of the book could be the basis of a social reconnection best seller, while the last quarter delves fully into the realm of the fantastic gothic horror. Ray Porter does a WONDERFUL job of reading this book. He effortlessly cycles through about a dozen character voices, is very easy to understand, has great pacing, and helped to fully immerse me into this fun story.

Truly Excellent! I couldn't stop until it was over

What does Ray Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Ray Porter is a big reason I was drawn to this book in the first place (because of Joe Ledger). He did NOT disappoint! One of the best, possibly THE best voice actors/narrators in the business. He always brings the characters to life and gives them more depth than my own imagination could ever achieve. Thanks Ray.

Any additional comments?

This author was unknown to me, but I plan on looking for more from him now. Fantastically original story with insightful twists, yet skillfully executed so that a pretty outrageous premise was palatable and believable without seeming totally whacked-out.

Best at surprising us

The only down side of this book is it lack of deep human emotion. Sometimes the narration seems to fun, forgetting the tense that builds up.

Amazingly catchy! Must read!

I usually don't get hooked on a storyline, but I was hooked on 14 from the start! If you are on the fence, definitely give it a shot. This book was well worth the purchase and I was very disappointed when it ended!

Can be insulting at the end....

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes I would definately recommend the book. The characters were somewhat comical and the little mysteries throughout keeping you listening.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Raised a Christian, I have a belief in God. Towards the end of the book, the other dimensional monster was compared to God.There was also a religious character in the book who turns out to be the bad guy. It made me wonder, is this how the author looks at God.

What does Ray Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

To me, when listening to my audio books I like narrators who are not monotone. When the narrator reads, you can sense the emotion of the character. All the characters sound different so you can envision what they look like.

Did 14 inspire you to do anything?

Well inspires me the next time I move into an apartment that just feels off, to leave ASAP.

Any additional comments?

The book is a great listen. It has its funny moments. I understand that everyone has their own religious beliefs. I was just a little taken aback towards the end.

The Twilight Zone meets Lovecraft meets Scooby-Doo

14 is an excellent mystery-thriller with a splash of horror and humor. Peter Clines develops the characters well and you become attached to the players as they explore and uncover their apartment building's secrets. I mention Scooby-Doo in the title of my review because you will feel like your tagging along with the "Mystery Gang" in trying to solve the riddles but trust me, this story is way more cunning and twisted and not as simple as unmasking Mr. Jenkins, the janitor, as the cause of the disturbances. I found 14 intelligent and thought provoking and a thrilling story with crazy twists and a very satisfying ending.

Ray Porter does an excellent job narrating. My only gripe is with his narration of female voices but that might be asking much. I still give the narration 5 stars.

If you like mystery and intrigue, mixed with a splash of horror and some comedy, you will love 14. I highly recommend it!

BTW, 450 S Kenmore Ave is the building that inspired the story. Look it up to get a visual in your head of the building as you listen to the book.
