Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

If you liked "Paradox Bound" you'll like this.

Like "Paradox Bound", its good fun fantasy rooted in the physics and mysteries of our time. If it isn't obvious in my other reviews, I love Ray Porter. His Veek ( a female, Indian accented main character) is gut-busting hilarious. Home-run on story and performance. Had to use restraint to not give five stars.

gripping

Gripping. Great story and narration. Made me look forward to my commute. The author did a great job of painting the screens and creating relatable characters.

Great Listen...

What made the experience of listening to 14 the most enjoyable?

The book itself was different than some other books I have been listening to through audible. It's a Sci-Fi/Mystery book that keeps you engaged and wanting to see what happens next.

What was one of the most memorable moments of 14?

When they opened the door to room 14.... you'll have to listen for yourself.

Have you listened to any of Ray Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The last couple chapters have some surprise twist's. I liked the ending of the book.

Fun, Entertaining

This is an interesting twist on the creepy apartment building story, and not one I was expecting! Although very far fetched, I did enjoy the story and found myself entertained throughout. Overall, however, I don't think I can give it more than 4 stars.

Twilight Zone meets Dune

Any additional comments?

This book is probably good for sci-fi fans but it is not a scary horror novel (as some of the reviews stated).

Fun sci-fi ride.

An entertaining sci-fi read. It starts slowly and builds to a satisfying conclusion. There are many unexpected turns in the plot. The characters are diverse and likable. The narration is excellent. A fun ride.

I love sci-fi and this delivers.

I liked it. Can't wait for more. A little crazy with some extraneous scenes that made you go "get on with it already" but overall a great listen. The love scene dialogue was the funniest ever and still makes me giggle. Ray Porters narration made this a great listen.

Clever,Original, and Entertaining but Too Weird

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would not recommend it to anyone who insists on plausible science fiction; i.e., stories in which its important mysteries have explanations of some sort and are not just left hanging in the wind.

Which character – as performed by Ray Porter – was your favorite?

Probably Tim, who was the most experienced and wise individual of the group.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

First half of the book was the best part.

A book of the unexpected

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, It held my attention throughout the entire read. The author, Mr. Peter Clines, has quite the imagination.

What did you like best about this story?

This is the first that I listened 2 by, Mr. Peter Clines. I will find my way 2 more of his audio books. I found this 2 b a very playful book. There r some very sad moments n it but I also found it 2 have authentic realism and dedication of the characters 2 one another and their purpose. I enjoy books that hold my attention throughout. There was always suspense mingled with a great amount of the unknown. U know it's a terrific read when n the end the hero can walk away with his love tucked under his arm.

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

Ray done a terrific job as usual.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

As I mentioned b4, that the author has a great imagination. It did make me think of the great abilities of other people 2 make us laugh or cry. I did neither, I had a hunger 4 the hero 2 prevail.
