Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

A Mystery Novel. Charming and Unexpected

This is a mystery novel. I didn't know that going into it, and I'm probably giving it a lower score because I just don't favor mystery novels. That being said, the book was pretty enjoyable and performed well. Without giving too much away, I'll say it was amazing how the story changes from reality to fantastical.

What I liked about this book: The love interest. Their chemistry is non-conventional, and really refreshing. I really liked all the characters, they were real, likable people that you would want to hang out with later, and you really cared for them. Which is surprising, because it's a large cast for such a small book.

What I didn't like: Now that I've listened to it and the mystery is solved, I don't want to listen to it again. Again, this is my problem with mysteries in general, so I'm probably biased. It was a little slow, and I find the main character the most uninteresting of the lot, though I love the other characters.

Will I listen to it again: No, I don't think so. BUt I am glad to have listened to it in the first place

Definitely different

Where does 14 rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I'm very into Sci-fi and decided to give this book a try. I was engaged throughout the entire novel. It's not in my top 10 favorite audiobooks but definitely worth listening to. The story slowly goes from a normal to sci-fi. The normal part of the book seemed a bit unrealistic but perhaps it was necessary to foreshadow what's to come.

What did you like best about this story?

The aspect of surprise. For the first half of the book I continued to make different theories and they continued to be false.

Which character – as performed by Ray Porter – was your favorite?

Definitely the main character.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

How far would you go to unlock a secret?

Fun enjoyable story

I really enjoyed this story. It was not the best book in the world but a fun ride and mystery scifi scoring adventure.

Not Your Typical Read

If you could sum up 14 in three words, what would they be?

imaginative, futuristic, visual

Would you be willing to try another book from Peter Clines? Why or why not?

Most likely not, I'm just not a big fan of this genre despite the fact that this book was well-paced and nicely written.

Have you listened to any of Ray Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't. He is a good narrator, easy on the ears.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I had to take it in parts. This book asked me to consider things outside my normal range of thinking and it took some processing for me.

Any additional comments?

It moved a little slow in parts but the story was engrossing. It just ended up being a big too "out there in the sci-fi genre" for my tastes.

Enjoyed the unexpected twists and turns of this unique and engaging book. Not my normal go-to genre, but I was hooked from the beginning and enjoyed the book very much.

Okay, nice start

Story starts off nice, turns into "okay" territory at the end. Not the worst use of 10 hours of your life

I believe in the words of bill THAT'S AWESOME!

Would you consider the audio edition of 14 to be better than the print version?

Never read the print version. But when I started the audio I couldn't stop until it was done. Then I played it again.

Which scene was your favorite?

Opening of the apartment 14.

Any additional comments?

Wow. How could this be made into a movie.

Another good listen

Another good listen. However I listened to The Fold before this and there are a lot of similarities, clearly The Fold was inspired by the format of this story, however it can be forgiven since both stand out as good stories.
