Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Keep you on the edge of your seat sci-fi mystery!

I thoroughly enjoyed 14. Peter Clines develops an interesting, motley crew of characters who find themselves in the midst of a strange mystery in their apartment building. At times the book gave me the heebie jeebies. At other times I laughed out loud! I expected an unsatisfying ending based on the other reviews but was happy with how the story wrapped up. Worth the read and I hope there is a sequel in the future!

Slow start, becomes very engaging and finishes well

An hour in i wasnt sure i'd finish, but i stuck with it. The story develops very well but the characters are not. With one or maybe two, if you count they guy who knows too much., exceptions the characters dont change as much as the background. Not a flaw but not what i'm used to reading. I enjoyed it and recommend if you chose to listen that you give it time.

A light read

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Overall, it was fun and I think I got a credit's worth out of it.

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

Ray Porter used a variety of accents for the characters and did it so that it enhanced the story.

Any additional comments?

The reviews encouraged me to try this book and I'm glad I did. The stage-setting at the beginning was somewhat off-putting, but soon the freshness of the story soon pulled me in. I used this book as light entertainment to unwind with at the end of the day. It wasn't difficult to keep up with, yet unexpected events and character interactions kept me listening. Not a life-altering tale, but worth reading.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I can't tell you how many times I stayed in my car to keep listening to this book after I arrived at my destination. I couldn't wait to get back in the car to keep going!

Thousands of Readers Can't Be Wrong. They Weren't

What made the experience of listening to 14 the most enjoyable?

Great writing. Porter's rich and varied narration is tops.

What other book might you compare 14 to and why?

I wish I knew of other books to compare to "14". I hope to find more!

What does Ray Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Aside from the wonderful way he has of individuating the characters, Porter's performance allows the listener to experience the rhythm and cadence of the writing. I write and teach creative writing, so it's icing on the cake, to learn craft from the performance.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I need to think about that. There are so many directions you could go with this.

Any additional comments?

Clines pulls off a rarity - one heck of a read with very little (if any) of the graphic stuff that's become the hallmark of our culture. Likeable characters, great dialogue, a well paced story, and no zombies or vampires! What's NOT to love??

I'm comfortable giving this to a grandmother or a high schooler. How many books can you say that about?

I hope to read more like this. : )

Great Adventure

I chose this book because I wanted to try something different. I am so glad I did. Right from the start, I was hooked. The characters in this story were absolutely wonderful. The plot was entirely fresh. If you want to see what a determined group of young people can do just read this story.

one of my all time favorites

Peter Clines is one of today's best sci-fi authors, with excellent characters and great pacing. Ray Porter is likewise one of the very best in the business for audiobook acting.

My Prey...Mine!

This is audiobook entertainment at its finest with the perfect balance of humor, horror, suspense, and adventure. In what may be Peter Clines' most popular book on Audible (at least in terms of five-star reviews), here is the epic, thriller-adventure novel, 14, where readers first encounter the interdimensional Threshold Universe—in all its Lovecraftian glory: creepy green bugs with extra arms; insectoid, spear-wielding soldiers; and, of course, sublime, flying, mind-control monsters. We are also treated to a cast of indomitable lead characters with a penchant for sass and pop culture references. Narrated by the brilliant Ray Porter, what's not to love? The combination of Scooby-gang antics and a truly malicious mystery make for a classic listening experience, one that gets followed up, fortunately, by a most worthy sequel, The Fold.
