Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

"A wholly original story that weaves together mystery and the apocalypse like a finely tuned band." (Evan Roy, Bricks of the Dead)

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

*Shrug*

This book was weird, no doubt about that. The story was not what I was expecting, but I still enjoyed it. The characters were well fleshed out and the performance was really entertaining. I’d have finished the book without the performance but it was certainly icing on an already good book. The only thing I didn’t like was the constant shrugging.

Surprise Sci-fi

I’m not a sci-fi reader. Downloaded by accident. This is a thriller read disguised as sci-if.

Excellent, far fetched story that had me considering the possibilities.

One of the best narrations I’ve heard.

Solid escape book. Incredible writing and almost believable. This is worth 2 credits.

I read The Fold 1st, this was still pretty good

-I guess I listened to this other way around. I listened to 'The Fold' 1st, also based on 14's universe but with different characters and a different story, and to be honest, this was just as awesome.
-While 'The Fold' really feels like it is written for a movie format, very fast paced, this was a bit slower... especially at the start, but it eventually got interesting.
-These are the only thriller books that i've been able to listen to so far, and they're pretty awesome.
-A lot of the descriptions are great, however I only wrote down 1 line from the book - 'The rest of the week crawled past like a dying man in the desert' But the writing was very descriptive, and smooth flowing.
-Great narrator too

Great Listen

First and foremost, Ray Porter is a god among men.

Next, Clines has a gift for taking the unbelievable and making it believable. And he does a good job of explaining the “science” behind it.

I enjoyed listening to the book and appreciate how it compliments “The Fold.”

If you’re not much of a sci-fi reader, don’t worry. Clines packages it in an appealing manner that will keep you hooked.

Story was ok, took a while to develop the plot.

A fun story with a few drawbacks. Good enough to finish. Narration had a sarcastic tone. Story took a long time to develop. Characters were one dimensional.

not a fan of the ending but still good

the idea that less is more should have applied to the end. the book went from a eerie mystery to a fantasy book. I will stop there because i don't want to spoil anything because I still feel it's a good read.

Great voice acting. Very engaging story

Listen to The Fold prior and love the world he has created. Eagerly hope for more from this story line. Voice acting is top notch and keeps you engaged
