Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

"A wholly original story that weaves together mystery and the apocalypse like a finely tuned band." (Evan Roy, Bricks of the Dead)

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Fantastic technological thriller

This story kept me engaged until the end. I cared about the characters and the story line was believable. The performance was spot on. I highly recommend this book.

I've listened to 14 three times and I never get tired of the characters, the action or the adventure. It's a fantastic listen.

Would you consider the audio edition of 14 to be better than the print version?

I loved everything about this purchase. The story was captivating and on the edge of your seat. I really enjoyed the development of the characters and particularly enjoyed Veek. The narration was superb and impressive.

The beginning part was better

Would you consider the audio edition of 14 to be better than the print version?

Did not read the print version.

Would you be willing to try another book from Peter Clines? Why or why not?

Yes, I like the storytelling overall.

Have you listened to any of Ray Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but I would definitely listen to him again.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

Any additional comments?

Overall, I liked this book. The story was great until they discovered the secret of apartment 14. After that, the culmination story took far too long and was not overly interesting other than the final chapter. Also, the culmination story brought in some sexist, stereotypical behaviors to the otherwise engaging characters, including the hysterical female, the female who can't handle a gun, the overly macho "I got this" no-vulnerability male, and the hyper-whiney-can't-stand-an-injury female. The narrator did a great job with tone and differentiating the many characters.

Fun all around

This was such a good story. I'll be looking for other Peter Clines books in the future. Narration was top-notch and the storyline engrossing. I enjoyed all the characters.

*Shrug*

This book was weird, no doubt about that. The story was not what I was expecting, but I still enjoyed it. The characters were well fleshed out and the performance was really entertaining. I’d have finished the book without the performance but it was certainly icing on an already good book. The only thing I didn’t like was the constant shrugging.
