Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

If you could sum up 14 in three words, what would they be?

Interesting, Exciting & Thrilling

What was one of the most memorable moments of 14?

When they found the Tunnel

Which scene was your favorite?

When they came back

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes & no, all in one day, but I had to stop to charge my headphones

Any additional comments?

Very well Narrated, For me to listen to a book it is very important to have someone good to narrate it. Ray Porter did an excellent job.

Great story with a fairly good ending

The character relationships, dialogue and early story line are very good. The ending is not intense enough and I feel could have played through better. I may be being too critical. It is worth a listen.

Thoroughly Enjoyed

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This was my first Peter Clines novel, but certainly not my last. And the narrator was the icing on the cake. Now excuse me while I go start my next Clines novel.

Really enjoyed this.

I read the ebook and enjoyed it enough that I got the Audible version. This is an engaging mash up of mystery and sci-fi. Usually I'm disappointed with the ending of this kind of story. This was just right.

Interesting Plot

I really enjoyed listening to this book. It was unique, creative. and entertaining..all things a sci-fi book should be! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars across the board is that too many questions lingered in my mind after this book wrapped up. Most of the questions were sub plots and it bothered me that they were never explained. For example, it was never explained why people in some apartments slept well and others left after 6 months due to not sleeping or having nightmares. Why even add this info if the author never explains why this occurs!? !It seemed that the book ended abruptly and was a little rushed.

RESET THE STAR RATING FOR ALL OTHER BOOKS!

Would you listen to 14 again? Why?

Yes, Definitely! I have already started listening to parts of it again with my daughter and discovered that there are little things of importance that I initially didn't pay attention to. So, I will be listening to this again from the beginning and still hold on to the edge of my seat while I do.

What was one of the most memorable moments of 14?

What's behind the door of apartment 14. That is all I will say because I don't want to spoil anything for any future readers!

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

He did a wonderful job of the different voices and accents of the characters. Superb job on inflection in the voices and makes you feel you're listening in on the conversations.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! It was so hard to put down that I was sleep deprived for a few days while I listened in long stretches. If I didn't have to work I wouldn't have turned it off.

Any additional comments?

Get it! Listen! and then listen AGAIN!

14 by Peter Clines - A solid offering

Any additional comments?

A good listen that has the right amount of suspense, enjoyable characters and is well paced. I liked the blending of historical characters such as Tesla and H. P. Lovecraft into the book, and the author uses their works as a basis for a 'Doomsday Scenario' that the group in the book must join together to avoid. Ray Porter did a very capable job of reading this selection and I enjoyed his characterizations. He gives each of the characters an individuality which made this book all the more enjoyable.

What Fun!

This was my first WhisperSync audible purchase and I loved going back and forth from Kindle to Audible. The story was suspenseful and filled with entertaining characters--best described (as the author does throughout) as Shaggy, Daphne, Velma and Fred. Oh how we cheer for "Shaggy" and adore the sharp-tonged, Russian "Velma" and the blue-haired "Daphne" as they solve all the riddles of the universe locked in apartment.....oops, spoiler alert.

As with most Sci-Fi, when you finally look behind the curtain it is never quite as thrilling as the pages you just raced through to get there. But Peter Clines does not hold back on any of the potential for other-worldly adventure.

All that being said, by far the best feature of this audio-book is the narrator--Ray Porter. For my next audible purchase, I will definately seek out another book based on his narration. He was able to use different voices for each of the characters in this vast ensemble--not an easy task with the various ethnic backgrounds and the different women involved. And he did so masterfully. When the final threatening voices are added at the end of the tale, Mr. Porter nailed the haunting/threatening voice which sounded (to me at least) similar to Gollum. Bravo on an outstanding narration!

If you want to spend the next 9-10 hours solving puzzles and running for you life--this is absolutely the story for you!
