Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Beware of Monsters

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

yes, if they liked the horror/syfy genre

If you’ve listened to books by Peter Clines before, how does this one compare?

I don't know that I have, he was an excellent narrator.

Which scene was your favorite?

breaking into room 14

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no

Any additional comments?

I loved the narration, however the first 70% of the book the characters were 'playing detective' about the apartment building and only in the last few chapters did the action start. I think there was a little to much time spent on the character/mystery of the building. The narration really made up for the slow bits in the story.

Decent book

The story is pretty engaging, but not a hang by the edge of your seat kind of book. It keeps you entertained without ever making you desperate to keep listening. The characters are likable, but I didn’t really fall in love with any of them. I thought the performance was flawless.

Creative

Not like any book I have read or listened to. It was somewhat interesting throughout, but the story was a little too much like an acid trip. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone as a must hear. I wouldn’t advise against either.

I liked this book although I normaly do not reach out for mistery or SF. But this one was quite funn and I really enjoyed it.
Author's sence of humor gave the book additional cool feel.

Another excellent story about Dimensional travel!

Read this and read The Fold. They really work well together. They create corresponding inter-dimensional trips that will have you needing to get to the end!

Don’t push that button

It was a little more sci-fi then I’m used to but I can say I fully enjoyed hearing a good story line. Narration was well done, with many characters.

Welcome to the Kavach building...Mwahahaha!

The Kavach building is strange. Apartments don't have matching layouts, the building manager is secretive, strange green cockroches are everywhere, the rent is ridiculously cheap and that's just the beginning. The plot is a wonderful mix of mystery, adventure and thriller that will keep you puzzled and facinated all the way through. Tilt your head and listen in curiosity as what starts off as a bunch of tenants trying to puzzle out some oddities turns into an out of control science fiction mystery thriller.

Written for adults who would enjoy something that feels like a fusion of Scooby-Doo and Cathulu with a dash of jaded millennial perspectives, Roy Porter does a brilliant job of bringing this strange story to life with his ability to use his narration to make every character seem more fully fleshed out than the writing seems to permit.

"14" grips it's audience's focus and is very hard to stop listening to. Anyone who ever lived in an old apartment building that sometimes gave them the creeps for reasons they can't put into words will be absolutely be rivited by this audiobook.

Mystery Sci-Fi Thriller, with over the top payoff!

enjoyable and engaging right from the beginning. I loved how most all of the clues were the BEST kind - the kind that leave you scratching your head saying "what the heck"?? until it all starts to glue together at the end.
(no spoilers, so keep reading)
The end, while my initial reaction was that it just seemed way over the top and out there, the more I thought about it - the more I found that It was perfect. And anybook that leaves you playing sequences back in your mind for analysis, is awesome.
