Publisher's summary

On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back?

In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

It begins with Jake Epping, a 35-year-old English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine, who makes extra money teaching GED classes. He asks his students to write about an event that changed their lives, and one essay blows him away: a gruesome, harrowing story about the night more than 50 years ago when Harry Dunning’s father came home and killed his mother, his sister, and his brother with a sledgehammer. Reading the essay is a watershed moment for Jake, his life - like Harry’s, like America’s in 1963 - turning on a dime.

Not much later his friend Al, who owns the local diner, divulges a secret: his storeroom is a portal to the past, a particular day in 1958. And Al enlists Jake to take over the mission that has become his obsession - to prevent the Kennedy assassination.

So begins Jake’s new life as George Amberson, in a different world - of Ike and JFK and Elvis, of big American cars and sock hops and cigarette smoke everywhere. From the dank little city of Derry, Maine (where there’s Dunning business to conduct), to the warmhearted small town of Jodie, Texas, where Jake falls dangerously in love, every turn is leading, eventually of course, to a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald and to Dallas, where the past becomes heart-stoppingly suspenseful - and where history might not be history anymore. Time-travel has never been so believable. Or so terrifying.

Editor's Pick: Best of the Decade

A nostalgic trip
"Stephen King’s 11.22.63 is a technicolor romp to the past where the root beer tastes better, cars have more class, and listeners are warned to beware the yellow card man. I was not alive in 1963, but after spending 30+ hours listening to narrator Craig Wasson bring these fictional (and real) characters brilliantly to life, I feel like while I didn’t live there, I’ve at least visited for a long weekend. Blending time travel, history, a little romance, and political intrigue, this is an oddly feel-good tale—odd because it's about assassination and comes from the king of horror. The thing is that King also just happens to be a masterful storyteller whose best work of the decade will warm your heart more than scare the hell out of you." — Tricia F., Audible Editor

On the the best Stephen King books ever!

What made the experience of listening to 11-22-63 the most enjoyable?

This is a great story, very well written by Stephen King. The audiobook was a delight to listen to mostly because of the great narration by Craig Wasson. The rhythm was so accurate that you could see, hear and feel everything he described. Also his character voice acting was very well and helped me differentiate one character from the other very easily.

What was one of the most memorable moments of 11-22-63?

The final chapters were great and the plot twist is incredible!

What about Craig Wasson’s performance did you like?

He's a great voice talent! The rhythm was so accurate that you could see, hear and feel everything he described. Also his character voice acting was very well and helped me differentiate one character from the other very easily.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Stop Keneddy's assassination and save the world... nor not?

Best Yet!

There are many amazing stories in the King canon...but in my humble opinion...the best one yet! Craig Wasson was a perfect George Amberson along with nailed inflections on each one of the other multiple characters throughout this story.

Tripple 5s for this; King of all time

I have to join with all the other 5-star voters on this one. It has all the ingredeients of an all-time-best for King. The JFK assination scenario (and the surrounding controversies) provide a great combination of fiction with underlying factual base, with plot and storyline. The competing "conspiracy theories" are intertwined, with everyone pointing the finger at the others (the Russians, CIA, FBI, Mafia, Cubans, democrats, communists, republicans, racists, John Birchers), but with no "answer" one way or the other (King's own belief is that Oswald acted alone, vs his wife's view of "conspiracy" w/ a "second shooter"). Then immagination and dilemma constantly pull on your emotional and intellectual strings in oposite directions. Kept me on the edge of my seat, could not put this one down. Those from the era of the 50s and 60s will enjoy reliving those times (complete with "sock hops", swing dance, "sparking" at the drive-in, poodle skirts, Annette Funichello and the Mouseketeers, '61 Galaxy Fords and Chevy Impalas). King is a master at this kind of background development. At the same time, this classic King also challanges the imagination: We've all had thoughts of "if only I could do it over again?" Monday morning quarterbacking makes for interesting conversation, but if you really had to do it over again, would you do it any differently? Can you truthfully say that the outcome would be different? Would there be an "offsetting penalty" to pay? Good time-travel book, better King immagination; outstanding storytelling. This one's headed for Hollywood. Watch.

Fabulous Darling

Would you listen to 11-22-63 again? Why?

I would listen to it again and again. The narrator was so great and the book was even better

What did you like best about this story?

The total possibilty of what if this could really happen, would the world change in that way.

Which character – as performed by Craig Wasson – was your favorite?

Jake

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me wonder what if and how sad that the future fights back

Any additional comments?

What a wonderful book to read and listen to. I have done both, but the listening was wonderful because the characters came to life. Horray for Steven King and Craig Wasson.

Best King Novel in Years!

Great to listen to a complete story that takes years to come to fruition. This writing skill is reminiscent of King's earlier, "The Stand" and I hope more will follow. The story itself is well thought out, and as the writer himself explains at the end of the story, you can tell that many people and much research went into its creation. Bravo!
