Publisher's summary

As a member of the Bourbon Street Boys private security firm, Antoinette "Toni" Delacourte is one strong woman, but despite her reputation for being tough as nails, she is haunted by her past mistakes. Now they're catching up to her, and throwing her for a loop.

Ten years ago, Toni kissed Lucky, her brother's best friend. Worried it would break apart the group she'd come to see as family, she walked away - straight into the arms of Charlie, and an abusive relationship.

For the past decade she's tried to keep her feelings for Lucky platonic - he's her friend, her colleague, and he's got his own past to deal with. Free of Charlie but unable to shake his memory, Toni finds herself feeling vulnerable and unable to deny her attraction to Lucky any longer.

She's always thought that kiss was her first mistake, but now she's wondering whether the real mistake was running away.

Not the best in the series, HORRIBLE narration

What didn’t you like about Sophie Amoss’s performance?

Awful. The main character's "voice" is so bad, I cringed through the first 5 minutes. I then desperately searched for a way to return it...no dice, not returnable. Read the book, do not listen to this train wreck of a narration.

No good

The voice was terrible. The story was predictable and I could barely finish it. I kept hoping it would get better, but no.

Too much accent

Story fine, but told mainly from main character's point of view. Problem is that the narrator for this version tried to give the main character a speech impediment of some kind. I assume she was trying to do a New Orleans accent but none of the other characters had it and I don't recall being so annoyed by anyone's accent when I was in New Orleans. This really distracted me from the story.

great book, don't care for the narrator

I like the story so far but I can't finish the book because the narrator's voice is irritating.

I could not get past the first chapter.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

some one might enjoy it more if they read it the narrator was not good.

The voice was the major detraction from the book. I just could not get past it.

Eh, I really was not into this one

I think it is the whole tough chick attitude Toni has and the weirdness she has exhibited so far in the series. I just never gelled with her and had hoped this book would do the ticket. She just had too much chip on the shoulder for my liking. And so much DRAMA!! Really not for me. Sadly, the whole book from her POV was too much for me to take. I almost did not finish.

There was steam and there was a bit of suspense, but it was hard for me to care. I am sure there are people who will like this book, it was just the end of the line for me with this series. I was hoping things would get better, that characters would gain substance and the suspense would be more fleshed out. It just never came together for me.

The narration by Sophie Amoss was another bone of contention for me. I am sure she does a great job when she is using a more natural tone, but the accent for the lead was grating. When she was doing standard narration or the guys voices, she was fine, it was Toni's over the top tone that didn't work for me.

I barely made it through this book. Unfortunately, it was a combination of the story and the read. Not a great pairing.

This was an almost free read thanks to Kindle Unlimited, so not a hit to my wallet. It is definitely a perk of the program that I was able to try a book that was a maybe from the start.

So disappointed with the narrator!!!!!

I am an audiobook junkie (1000+++in my libraries) and this is the first one in years I stopped listening to in the first 30 minutes, and I was trying to be optimistic by listening 30 minutes in hopes it would get better. The narrator was TERRIBLE!! I know she was trying to do a New Orleans accent but it was so awful it was a distraction. Pass on the listen and pick up the book to read the story. So disappointed because the previous books were great.

DNF. HORRIBLE NARRATION!!!

I'm sorry, but I couldn't make myself finish this one. I just couldn't get past the grating voice of the narrator, with the overdone fake accent. It was actually giving me a headache. The story wasn't good enough for me to put up with the voice. The main character (girl) was way to annoying, self centered, and whiny to be likable. I loved the first book in the series, the second was ok, but the third isn't even close to good.

good, but not great

it's a light read, entertaining but not compelling. not as good as some of her earlier work. narrator was decent, but she seemed to struggle creating a NO accent... came off a little more like some one trying to speak ebonics.
