Nick Gentry is reputed to be the most skillful lover in all England. Known for solving delicate situations, he is hired to seek out Miss Charlotte Howard. He believes his mission will be easily accomplished – but that was before he met the lady in question.
For instead of a willful female, he discovers one in desperate circumstances, hiding from a man who would destroy her very soul. So Nick shockingly offers her a very different kind of proposition – one he has never offered before. He asks her to be his bride.
And he knows that this will be much more than a union in name only. For he senses what Charlotte does not yet know – that her appetite for sensuality matches his own. But what Nick learns surprises him. For while London’s most notorious lover might claim Charlotte’s body, he quickly discovers it will take much more than passion to win her love.

I believe the narrator can add so much to the fondness of a book as I am sure most people do as well. The way this narrator lowers her voice to perform as a man actually helps her give the character a sexy sound. Loved the story especially since I have personally been involved in a similar circumstance. I believe Lisa did a great job showing the character's susceptibility and fears all the way. However, where she falls short is at the end trying to tidy all. Abusive men usually take the one they obcess about first and then their own. But I feel that did not take away from the story. I highly recommend this book.
The 3rd book in the Bow Street Runners series does not disappoint. This book is all about the relationship of Nick Gentry, reformed (or is he?) former thief taker and current Bow Street Runner, and Miss Charlotte Howard, on the run from the disgusting man that her parents promised her hand to. Full of romance, steamy sex scenes, fun dialog, and plot twists, I found this book really fun to listen to! I am so disappointed that there are no more stories in this series. Thanks to Lisa Kleypas for another fun historical romance.
Never judge a book by its movie
I actually really like the back stories of both characters. Both having to live lives that were not of their own choice.
Loved Nick Gentry!!! 1860's Bad Boy with a heart of gold.
( Picture Richard Armitage in MI 5)
Nick Gentry and
his brother - in law - Sir Ross Cannon (From Lady Sophia's Lover)
When Nick revels his story to Charlotte. It was so moving.
This is Book 3 of the Kleypas's Series " Bow Street". A fantastic Series...
Book 1 "Someone to Watch Over Me" ( which was not made into an audio book) was my favourite of the Series.
Tell us about yourself!
One of my favorite reads, this story is the sequel to Lady Sophia's Lover, which I didn't know at the time I listened to it. It didn't matter: it is a superb "read". However, since Sophia's Lover is also a "must have" book, I'd listen to it first if you are new to the series. The characters are all strong and well developed, with several great sub-plots. Sophia, Sir Ross and the Bow Street Runners reappear, as well as the Earl of Westfall from earlier books. And then there are the dark, evil characters from Lotty's past which have to be dealt with. Nick's redemption, through Lotty's love, is wonderful, and actually believable. The sex scenes are gentle and funny, but HOT! As an historical novel, Kleypas does a terrific job of painting a picture of life in mid-1800's London. Susan Duerden is wonderful as a narrator, as always. You don't want to miss this series!
Just a personal preference but I found it very irritating that most of the story is told in a hushed/whispered/breathless voice. It did get better as it went and I can see how others may enjoy a breathy voice, for me it detracted from the story.
Her voice for Nick is extremely creepy. I could hardly stand to listen to the rest of the book. Thought I would warn others before they bought this book. Great Story... Poor Narration. The end :)
I was not sure I would like this as much as Sophia's and Ross's story but I did! I love Nick and was happy that he found someone who loved him. He had such a tortured childhood and he deserved to find someone to love and be loved. I loved listening to The Bow Street Runners stories. Susan Duerden is a great narrator! I will be looking foreword to listening to more of Lisa's books and to more of Susan's narrations.
He is hired to find her for an obsessive man. She is drawn to him until it is revealed who he works for. But he is drawn to her and offers his protection. Their journey to love is satisfying.
This was a captivating and engaging story. Whenever I feel the need for a historical romance, I'll look for a Lisa Kleypas book. It never fails to deliver! There's always the brilliant storyline, amazing chemistry between the characters and the connection you can't help but feel for them.
Charlotte was a great heroine. Innocent and sweet yet strong and levelheaded.
Nick was a complex man. An enigma perceived to be hardened and unforgiving yet he was the sweetest with Charlotte.
Another story that left me with a happy and contented smile. Loving this series.
*On Audible and the narrator, Susan Duerden, was brilliant!*
Read this some years ago in a paperback and loved it then. And this time with audible and it has only gotten better!!! Thank you!!!!
