Publisher's summary

Intellectual Sophia Bennett knew what kind of man she wanted: a rugged cowboy. And in Texas they were everywhere! So why couldn't she take her eyes off brilliant professor Max Travers? He was a Wizard in mathematics who surely made love by the numbers. Yet every inch of him - no Stetson, no dusty boots - added up to dangerously sexy.

Could she be more annoying?

This girl was annoyance personified from start to finish! It is only in the pages of a romance novel that anyone could find this person even remotely appealing. Save yourself the frustration and eye rolling and skip this one.

Early Effort by a Genre Master

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I am somewhat ambivalent on this question. I enjoyed listening to one of the early efforts by a favorite author. However, like many early works, it is not up to the standards of this author's efforts in the last ten to fifteen years. It is not a story that really held my interest and is not one I want to listen to ten or more times as I have some of her others.

Would you be willing to try another book from Jayne Ann Krentz? Why or why not?

Oh definitely. As mentioned above, I could tell that this was a very early work by a favorite author and someone who is one of the best authors in the romance genre.

Any additional comments?

Overly Dramatic Narration Ruins This One

I sure will be happy when Audible lets you rate both the book and the narration separately. What ruined this book was the nauseating over emphasis put on every single word from the narrators mouth. Plus Ashley Aldon and her producer got the whole tone of the book wrong! I've read the book many times and the heroine was not a smart mouthed *itch and the hero was not a quiet nerd! But that is what we get with this narration. Instead of the two very confident people finding common ground that were written in the book. A classic JAK from 1985 trashed by the narration/production. Two stars, only in nod to JAK.

GOOD OLDIE

Loved this story when it first came out, and is still good today - even if a bit outdated, I would still recommend it.

From 1985, under pseudonym Stephanie James

I'm absolutely a devotee of Krentz' later years, even twenty years plus. But in her earliest Silhouette and Harlequin years, she wrote to fit a somewhat different genre. Besides being shorter in length, those early books under many other pen-names were much more about ultra-macho dominating men, with women co-leads who asserted themselves only to a token degree, but then adored those do-what-I-tell-you controlling alpha males. This one is a fairly enjoyable listen for mature, confident women, but markedly less so for girls or immature women who might think that sort of relationship shows he-must-love-me-see-how-jealous (overly controlling) my man is.

I know it had it's bad moments I enjoyed it anyway

I, unlike most of the other reviewers quite liked this, maybe if I'd actually read the book I may have felt differently, but it is what it is - a lighthearted feel good totally fictional romance novel. I agree that the female character was a really annoying bit_ _ and very dislikeable and that there were 'eye rolling' parts but it was also fun and enjoyable. However, I'm a JAK fan and pretty much love all her work but some are better than others and this one's a 3 not a 5.

Worth a credit? No, but get I'd get it if it's on sale and be happy.

a good one to skip

I got this one on a $4.95 sale, and feel it was too expensive. I'm a JAK fan, but this is clearly one of her earliest books. The heroine is annoying, and the hero doesn't make any headway with her until he out-alphas the (rather weak) other alpha competitor. I finished it, hoping it would get better, but it didn't.

Good story but could use some updating

This story could use some updating but overall it’s a good story. The h stands up for herself, is actually quite smart and learns her own worth. The H is a nice guy and is supportive. Some of the interrelationship values are quite dated but if you can get past that it’s a good book.

The narration! Yikes

I'm guessing this book is early Krentz before she got the hang of the strong heroine. Readable, and I do mean "readable." However, this narrator chose to turn a weak-ish heroine into a petulant brat, striking out at the hero because she dislikes herself. Just an awful narration, taking a so-so book and making it unbearable. Are there no editors/directors for these things What were they, or this vituperative narrator, thinking???

Dramatically Angry Performance

This performance was very distracting for me. She was overly dramatic, and her men's voices were stilted and halting. The hero and heroine were not likable characters when she voiced them. The heroine was voiced as a whiny, recalcitrant shrew, and the hero did not sound like a professor, but like a pompous, arrogant bully who pauses between each word. It's difficult to listen to a romance novel that has characters that you can't possibly root for.
