I really overall enjoyed this book. plus I LOVE Phil Gigante as narrator. He always does a wonderful job. The only thing missing was the highland brough that he uses in many of his books! :) Fun read, fun story, very enjoyable.
The pace, characters and overall feeling of being in the moment with every scene brought this book up into my, play out loud as I work in the garden league. I loved it.
The recent series on the Hallmark channel of Where the heart is.
I made the choice knowing he was the narrator. He brings the story off the page in full color.

A trilogy. Say it in three. Done.
Phil Gigante delivered a solid performance of this subpar western romance, set in 1875 Wyoming Territory. I especially liked Gigante's portrayal of the cowboy hero, the two kids, and the obnoxious Mrs. Hollyhock. My only quibble is with his portrayal of the heroine, but that wasn't too bad.
As for the story, the only parts I unreservedly enjoyed centered around the orphans, Sarah and Gabe.
The problem is, Fyffe fabricated drama, even though the murderous villains and the daily challenges of life on the hardscrabble land should have been the vehicle for plenty of tension and challenge. In order to manufacture drama, Fyffe used poor communication -- the main characters never said what they really thought, hiding behind all sorts of lame excuses. Misunderstandings and deceptions prevail in the relationship.
The heroine was too stupid to live (for one example, going into town alone when a killer just attacked).
A contrived shotgun marriage. Why DID she share her bed with him -- a virtual stranger? Out of character. There were other sleeping options.
The book is full of platitudes and clichés (don't put up your umbrella before it starts raining; everything happens for a reason).
Characterization did NOT add up. Examples below:
1) The heroine was supposedly warmhearted, loving, and virtuous, but her actions spoke otherwise. I already mentioned tha she shared her bed with a stranger. Even worse, in chapter one she finds out her husband Nathan is dead. Her relationship with Nathan was described as an affectionate friendship, trusting but not romantic. Okay, fine with me, but WHY didn't she seek to bury his body? It's the least we owe our husband, even our good friends. If not a burial, then at least ask the local preacher to say a few words in his memory, even without a body. Nope. Couldn't (wouldn't) she even say a prayer for him? Nope. Instead, she cried because his death means she won't be able to adopt the orphan Sarah. Within days of her husband's death, she is lusting after Chase.
And all the while, the author stuffs the narrative with banal tripe about hope, love, faith. Don't get me wrong. I got nothing against faith, hope, or love, but a character's actions should convey the message.
2) The hero (Chase) is quite intelligent but signs X for his name, because he never learned to read or write. Okay, I can easily buy that, given the setting. However, we are also told that Frank Lloyd taught him all about investments, banking, bookkeeping. He has a substantial sum in the bank and is a careful money manager, yet never bothered to learn to sign his name? A character so ambitious and so intelligent would absolutely learn. A loving mentor like Frank would absolutely teach him.
3) Poor characterization of Mr. Hobbs and his wife. How could such a supposedly wise and kind man have absolutely no idea that his wife viciously abuses the children at their orphanage? The abuse went on for years. RIGHT under his nose. If the orphans love him so much -- and he loves them -- wouldn't he see signs? I cannot swallow Fyffe's portrayal of Mr. Hobbs as wise. His blindness conveys that he's a fool. Or, if he sees the abuse and does nothing about it because the perpetrator is his wife, then he's not kind.
Many people love this book, but I need the plot and characters to cohere, to make sense. I did appreciate the scenes with the two orphans, ages 4 and 12.
Importance of family.
Probably any of Caroline's books in this series or the McCutcheon's series or the Mail Order Brides of the West series, the books she wrote in that series.
I did read the book but Phil did a good job of putting all the characters that spoke into the story better than just reading. He does a good job of narrating women and men and has a good voice and intonation for western accents and kids as well.
A widow adopting a young girl from the same orphanage she was in comes to find family and love for real and hard life but a good one. Sweet western romance that takes place in the late 1800's in Wyoming Territory.
I love any of Caroline's stories and haven't found one yet that I wouldn't give a 5 star rating to and I have heard two of her books so far from audible cooks and two different narrators and still loved them both.
I will continue to read any and all of her books as she is a fantastic author and her books are sweet Christian romances with many twists and turns.
I would recommend this audible and the book version both of this story and any of her stories.
my first book by this author and won't be the last. I read/listen all different types of books, but it's been awhile for a romantic western.
This book had a strong story line and strong characters. With lots of unexpected twists. Ms Fyfee does a good job building the characters and backdrop. if you close your eyes you can picture the setting.
This book is about strangers becoming family first out of need (and trickery) and then love. You can almost feel the emotions building and you know what they are thinking because Ms Fyfee doesn't leave anything out.
As for Phil Gigante he's always been one of my favorites and he does not disappoint.
great early West story with interesting twists. Found myself laughing out loud at the humour of an ambushed handsome cowboy-loner and the young, pretty widow he ended up marrying within a week from the time he met her, and Mrs. Hollyhock, the feisty, witty, to-the-point senior that got them married. This is a entertaining, fun read, er i mean listen!
He is great! Captured all characters personalities wonderfully. Can do women's voices without sounding silly. He does such good work, i don't know that i would have enjoyed it as much just reading it.
Good story that gives a glimpse of the way people lived in those times - orphans, and being a woman alone.
This book had all the essentials to keep me interested. Along with lots of action, there is good description of the home, food, people and their clothing. It kept my interest from the first page to the end, which was a good one that I could not guess.
To be fair, I'm not a fan of the (kind of) corny western love stories, especially when the author tries to replicate their manner of speech back then, and at times, I literally laughed out loud. However, moving past that, it was a decent story with a lot of cornpone thrown in. The lack of communication between the cowboy and the widow was annoying at best, and the ensuing drama was at times laughable. The narrator did a great job, except for the female voices. I struggle listening to most men mimicing a woman's voice, so I don't think it was him, per se. If you are a fan of this genre, you will enjoy this story.
Narration was very good. The story was terrible-melodramatic and cheesy. I don't understand why this book had so many glowing reviews. Save your time and a credit and pass on this one.
