Publisher's summary

Sophie Dempsey wants to help her sister film a video and then get out of Temptation, Ohio. Mayor Phin Tucker wants to play pool with the police chief and keep things peaceful. But when Sophie and Phin meet, they both get more than they want. Gossip, blackmail, adultery, murder, vehicular abuse of a corpse, and slightly perverse but excellent sex: all hell breaks loose in Temptation as Sophie and Phin fall deeper and deeper in trouble, and in love.

Oooooooo!!! Yea!!!!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely, I would recommend this book. Campy good fun with entertaining and dynamic characters.

What other book might you compare Welcome to Temptation to and why?

Wish I knew....... I'd go read them.

What about Aasne Vigesaa’s performance did you like?

The only thing I found disappointing at all is that she hasn't narrated MORE books. It's hard to adjust to a different reader when trying to listen to another Crusie book, because Vigesaa really seemed to capture the comic tone and created the perfect little nuances of the different characters. She pulled off all of male characters without making them sound like a bunch of sappy dopes.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I immediately went and found the sequel, FAKING IT, and loved the crap out of that one, too.

Any additional comments?

I started Crusie with these two books. I'll be crushed if it's all downhill from here. I've hated that these books are now a "known" to me, and won't be a fabulous new discovery until the dementia really sets in.

Good Book Reader Too Much in a Hurry

I read the reviews and knew that the reader read a little quickly, but I thought I would try. The first few chapters I thought I wouldn't be able to finish, but sometime after the next few chapters she did slow down and I was able to enjoy the book.

It’s a lovely developing romance.

The first time I read the paperback I thought it was great and laughed a lot. I reread the paperback in 2015 and found it to be more average the second time through. The middle felt slow, but the ending was great. In 2017 I listened to the audiobook. The middle wasn’t as slow when listening to the audiobook.

AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR:
Aasne Vigesaa (AV) was not good. It was hard for me to get into the story. I had to keep reminding myself to concentrate to stay interested. She read too fast. There was no curiosity, interest, or sense of wonder. It was just “hurry up and be done.” Her dialogue for Phin the hero was too fast and came out monotone. He was not sexy or desirable. I recommend AV listen to Will Patton and Frank Mueller to see how great narrators do it. On the positive side AV had a nice sounding voice, a good generic accent, and she did slow down a little toward the end.

DATA:
Narrative mode: 3rd person. Story length: 400 pages. Swearing language: strong including religious swear words but not often used. Sexual language: strong but not used much. Number of sex scenes: about 8 plus 4 more referred to with no details. Setting: current day mostly Temptation, Ohio. Copyright: 2000. Genre: contemporary romance with some suspense.

Snappy Dialog and Disreputable Characters

... my favorite combination.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Sometimes you just need a book that you don't have to take seriously. And there is no way to take this book seriously.

I love the Dempsy family. They are about as disreputable as it gets. And Temptation, as towns go, is pretty dysfunctional. When you add quick-witted dialog and a great narrator, it makes a very entertaining book.

I loved the chemistry between the two main characters as well as all the crazies orbiting around them.

Cruise can be inconsistent. Never bad, but not always good. She out does herself in this and especially in the sequel - Faking It. I wish she wrote more books about the Dempsy family. They are her best characters by far.

Sweet and snappy with fabulous narration

Welcome to Temptation is a great read that doesn't carry any of the angst of newer novels (no tortured heroes or heroines), with believable characters, great dialogue and storytelling. First published in 2000, there's a little bit of a dated feel (e.g., no one has a cell phone except for the mayor, who has a "car phone") but it's aging well. And, yes, it makes me feel weird to refer to a book published in 2000 as 'old'....

Phin and Sophie are our H/h. He's the mayor of Temptation, she's a newcomer from the wrong side of the tracks. Secondary characters abound and the plot is rich with details. There's plenty of sizzle, a decent amount of bacon and a whole lotta fun. Ms Crusie's lovely writing style handles all of the details without distracting from the story. As with other Crusie novels, there is a bit of a mystery (murder! blackmail! assault!) but it's lightweight. Well, unless you're the guy that bites it. Well, nobody liked him anyway.

I have one nitpicky little beef with the story. Ms Crusie relies a little on the sentence construction of "...", Phin said. "...", Sophie said. It gets a little grating when a scene starts to get long (imagine repeating he said. she said. he said. she said. over and over again). I don't know if it's ok in print but annoying on audible or what. Just saying it kept popping up to irk me. It's not enough of a problem to take off a star though.

I listened to this book (audible.com) and LOVED the narrator, Aasne Vigesaa. She made this older book come to life with her reading. I would listen to anything she narrates, she's that good. She's the icing on the cake that is Jennifer Crusie, who writes with a light hand that seems to say, "Don't mind me, I'm a bit of fluff" but who's writing is really snappy and makes you laugh, sometimes snort, all the while raising the temperature. Ms Vigesaa complements the story beautifully. Not a surprise then, that I'll finish the series and probably relisten to this. Given the memorable dialogue, I might get it for my Kindle.

Narrator was Awful....

What would have made Welcome to Temptation better?

I couldn't listen to this book because of the narrator.

Any additional comments?

I love Jennifer Cruise other books.

Better read it, if you can

The narrator is awful. After 10 minutes I just had to turn it off.. A pitty really, because the story seems lighthearted and fun.

Such a Funny Book

Temptation is just the name of the town. The two best friends, Thelma and Louise style just go for it. Along the way there are too many odd characters , and odd happenings. So the girls find something to keep them occupied. Thoroughly enjoyed this little book by Jennifer Cruise.

Funny even as reread

Yes, I am addicted to Crusie's books.
See publisher's blurb for clues to the plot, but the situational and conversational humor are the best part of any Crusie novel. Well, and, of course, the characters.
This is another that I started with the paperbacks until they kept wandering off, then I bought the audio.
Aasne Vigesaa has the characters and emotions down to a science, and that is great for us listeners!
