Crusie at the top of her game

This is one of my favorite novels and narrator Aasne Vigesaa simply nails it. It's funny and wise, and sexy as all get out. The large cast of weirdly charming and quirky Temptation residents is not to be missed. I adore the sweetly and craftily drawn romance between ultimate outsider Sophie and blue-blooded town mayor Phinn. This is book with real heart and soul and I can't recommend it enough.

A chick book that a guy can enjoy

For some reason, I thought I found the book blurb interesting, and it had such good reviews. Blurbs of other Jennifer Crusie books on Audible really sound like "chick" books and I suppose this one is also - but I really enjoyed this one!! The quirky characters are entertaining, the mystery part is well done, and the sex / love-making scenes were often either hot or funny or both! (For example, the scene where she attempts to act out his fantasy in the bar is a hoot!) It was just a lot of fun to listen to! And, the narrator did a great job! And this is a guy writing this review! Crusie sounds like such a good writer that I might even try another one, even though the plots sound as if they're for gals.

Well Done!

The only thing about a listening to a great book that can be disappointing, is trying to find another great book to follow it up. My wife and I had just listened to "Pleasure To The Max" by Cami Dalton and loved it. Sexy, funny and intriguing. How do you follow up a great listen like that? You get "Welcome To Temptation". Great characters, Great story. Constant laughing throughout.

Any complaints? Just two small ones. At first the narrator seems to be speaking too fast. I felt like your typical male trying to follow a conversation between three women at full speed. It took me a few chapters to feel comfortable with it. So either I got got used to her delivery, or she slowed down. Second, the sex was 'Just ok', not steamy. But everything else was so good, that that hardly mattered in the end.

We'll definitely be purchasing a few of her other books.

Welcome to Temptation or Hot Fleshy Thighs

Welcome to Temptation was my second Jennifer Cruise book and I enjoyed it just as much, probably more, than Bet Me. The plot is described above so I won’t retype it here. What I can tell you is the narrator was good (I had no issues with her at all but if you’re worried try the sample) and the plot is great. I will warn you this is an adult book with lots of sex and quite a bit of language. The characters were great and by the end of the book you hate to say goodbye to them. If you’re looking for great chick lit with some steamy scenes, some humor, a little bit of mystery, and a lot of craziness then come to Temptation and stay awhile. I will be reading Faking It soon. :)

Narrator issues!!!

Let me start out by saying that I LOVE Jennifer Cruisie. However the narrator of this book made it extremely hard to listen to her read the story. I felt like she was racing through the story. It made it seem like the sentences were run on sentences. I almost had to quit listening to the book because of the narration.

The "heat" made me "shudder"

I listened to Crusie's book "Faking It" with the same narrator and some of the same characters and absolutely loved it! So this one has been a rather rude shock. I'm definitely no prude, but at slightly more than halfway through, the overly frequent and interminable descriptions of the sex scenes between Sophie and the mayor are not only NOT a turn-on, they have finally forced me to fast forward through them in irritation. I don't know the actual word count of this book, but at least half of them are variations of "shiver", shudder", and "heat". Especially "heat". Sometimes it appears more than once in the same sentence. I finally concluded that either Jennifer was having a private joke at my expense, or had to meet a deadline by padding out a short story. Save the credit on this one.

A Red Herring Romance ...

Would you listen to Welcome to Temptation again? Why?

Probably not, but only because this is not my favourite audiobook genre. This said, the narrator was EXCELLENT. I have come to realise that the narrators who focus on voice affectation and emotion rather than differentiation are extremely good.

What did you like best about this story?

The story is very funny from start to finish, and because it is set in an small town, it has a quirky retro charm that most mature readers will enjoy.

Which scene was your favorite?

I can speak to favourite scenes, and I can honestly say that the banter between Sophie and Finn is absolutely heartwarming and funny.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh, definitely laugh. It would actually make a great Rom-Com, as the story reads like a cross between Sweet Home Alabama, Bridget Jones' Diary and Jerry McGuire.

Any additional comments?

The overarching theme of the book is the conflict between modern and old-fashioned attitudes towards intimacy, relationships and power. It also hints at the benefits and pitfalls of living in a broken family. All in all, an easy, entertaining read.

Welcome to Temptation

The story was good but I really did not like the narrator at all.

Wonderful

This is a clever, witty book. The dialogue is quick and intelligent and the plot is surprising. I love the way Jennifer Cruisie writes. This is one of her best. The characters are wonderful, quirky and real life funny. I would listen to and read it more than once.

A great listen

Welcome to Temptation is on my list of top listens for 2009. It was laugh out loud funny (which was somewhat problematic during a crowded commute).
