Publisher's summary

Jaclyn Wilde is a wedding planner who loves her job - usually. But helping Carrie Edwards with her Big Day has been an unrelenting nightmare. Carrie is a bridezilla of mythic nastiness, a diva whose tantrums are just about as crazy as her demands. But the unpleasant task at hand turns seriously criminal when Carrie is brutally murdered and everyone involved with the ceremony is accusing one another of doing the deed.

The problem is, most everyone - from the cake maker and the florist to the wedding-gown retailer and the bridesmaids’ dressmaker - had his or her own reason for wanting the bride dead, including Jaclyn. And while those who felt Carrie’s wrath are now smiling at her demise, Jaclyn refuses to celebrate tragedy, especially since she finds herself in the shadow of suspicion. Assigned to the case, Detective Eric Wilder finds that there’s too much evidence pointing toward too many suspects. Compounding his problems is Jaclyn, with whom he shared one deeply passionate night before Carrie’s death. Being a prime suspect means that Jaclyn is hands-off just when Eric would rather be hands-on. As the heat intensifies between Eric and Jaclyn, a cold-blooded murderer moves dangerously close. And this time the target is not a bride but one particularly irresistible wedding planner, unaware of a killer’s vow.

Was Joyce Bean busy?

Talk about missing the point. I think the delivery would have better with a speech enhanced Kindle. This is a funny, tongue-in-cheek mystery, along the lines of Blair Mallory. This is a area Linda Howard does extremely well and this book is no exception. The narration was just wrong, not bad, just wrong. Clarinda Ross was perfect for Waltzing at the Piggly Wiggly but totally missed the mark here. This book needed someone like Joyce Bean or Susan Ericksen.

With that said, I decided to just rate the book, which is Linda Howard all the way, well written characters and a good plot line. You know who-done-it and why early on, but still it's a fun ride.

fun to listen to

A mix of Dying to Please, Drop Dead Georgeous and To Die For. This was fun to listen to. I liked it.

Worth the narration

A long time fan of Linda Howard, and I’m surprise that this is the first time I’ve experienced this book. I’ve definitely been missing out, because the story is wonderful. I’m sure I would have liked it better reading it, rather than listening to it, but it is still well worth the investment. The narrator’s most enthusiastic narration is announcing the new chapter; otherwise, stilted and uncomfortable.

Veil of Night

This has been one of my favorite books to read but when I heard it on Audible, it seemed much too wordy. The thinking out loud just seemed to go on and on. Otherwise, the story was good and the narrator was good.

Tiny bit boring

Would you try another book from Linda Howard and/or Clarinda Ross?

Yes, the book was quite funny in parts, but there was a lot of extraneous detail

What about Clarinda Ross’s performance did you like?

A good performance. She adjusted her voice really well particularly for the male characters

Very entertaining and quite funny

The reader was perfect for this book about a murdered bride, who more than deserved it. Added to the mystery is a hot romance and funny insights on current weddings. I really enjoyed listening and often found myself laughing out loud at the wedding antics.

Doesn’t know what kind of book it wants to be

This was described as a cozy murder mystery, but it does not belong in the genre. The main character does not do any detecting but is merely a suspect. It is really a romance novel with bad sex scenes. It’s not even really a romance novel because it doesn’t have much to do with love or romance in the leads.

The solution to the mystery was the most obvious possible, thus it was not a mystery.

A waste of time for what could have been a cool concept.

Allyou wanted to know about wedding planning...

Too bad I'm married - I now know how to plan several types of weddings and how to keep a bride happy. Too bad Linda Howard, whom I normally read or listen to with great enjoyment, didn't keep this in the 1990's box it came from. The plot could have been funny - but sex with a virtual stranger, from two supposedly rational human beings living in the modern age? Yelling, pouting, huffing?

I live in the south, I know southern women. I've taught kindergarten. The narrator, Clarinda Ross, spoke as if she was talking to developmentally delayed southern kindergartners. I will watch for her name as the narrator and avoid her like the plague.

Hopefully, Howard, will log onto her computer and pull up a file marked 2010 for her next book!
