Publisher's summary

Merit, Chicago's newest vampire, is learning how to play well with others. Other supernaturals, that is. Shapeshifters from across the country are convening in the Windy City, and as a gesture of peace, Master vampire Ethan Sullivan has offered their leader a very special bodyguard: Merit.

Merit is supposed to protect the Alpha, Gabriel Keene - and to spy for the vamps while she's at it. Oh, and luckily Ethan's offering some steamy one-on-one combat training sessions to help her prepare for the mission.

Merit must accept the assignment even though she knows that she'll probably regret it. And she's not wrong. Someone is gunning for Gabriel Keene, and Merit soon finds herself in the line of fire. She'll need all the help she can get to track down the would-be assassin, but everywhere she turns, there are rising tensions between supernaturals - not least between her and a certain centuries-old green-eyed Master vampire.

Great Story.

I have read and listened to a lot of different vampire series and this series is definitely in my top five. The story line is wonderful, the narrator is excellent, and the characters are fun. I love this series and can’t wait for the next book to come out in August. I have already listened to this series a few times and will continue to do so. 5 stars.

Another writer for my "paranormal favorites' list

I have really been enjoying this vampire/supernatural series. The explanation for vampirism seems almost more plausible than most of the paranormal fiction novels I have read. For example: an alteration in the DNA. They are still living, still warm, can eat food but need blood supplements, are mostly immortal with some fatal flaws.... It is a bit irritating that we are kept in the dark as to Merit's real first name. And Merit should just boot Ethan to the curb. Cynthia Holloway's narration can be a bit confusing at times as there often isn't enough variation to differentiate between characters but she still does a pretty good read. Definitely not detracting enough to take away from the story. Bottom line is that if you enjoy listening to authors like Ilona Andrews, Jim Butcher, Jennifer Estep, Carrie Vaughn, Kim Harrison, Richelle Mead, Patricia Briggs, Charlaine Harris, J. R. Rain (another really good find), and T. A. Pratt, you will probably enjoy this series as well.

book is good, narrator not so much

Once again Cynthia Holloway does not make any indication to show she has noticed parentheses or asides. She is full steam ahead with her readings.

Excellent Series!

I actually give this third book in the series four and a half stars. I really am hooked on Chicagoland vampires, and I am very sorry that there's only one more book (please more!!), but just two things kept this from being up there on the list of my all-time favorite vampire series.

First reason is Merit, our intrepid heroine. She's feisty, she willful, she's stromg, resilient and sexy. But sometimes she borders on being a "Mary Sue". Mary Sue is a name given to usually female characters (sometimes male) who know more, perform better, figure things out faster than the leaders, experts or masters. They often save the day, saving everyone even though they are newbies. Merit just borders on Mary Sue-ism, but thankfully doesn't cross the line.

The second reason is the Ethan and Merit relationship continually upstaged any of the conflicts in the plot. Their relationship started and stopped, interrupted for some conflict. I know their issues couldn't be resolved immediately, but what ended up happening was I had a difficult time caring about all the troubles with the vampires and shape-shifters because I was so distracted with Ethan/Merit. I wanted to just hurry through all the fights and arguments and get back to those two.

SPOILER ALERT:

One thing made me very happy---no Red Guard! Thank goodness!!

Anyway, loved this book and on the next (and last, hopefully not!).

Twice Bitten

Well, things are coming to a head in more than one way. I don’t know how I feel about the relationship between the master and Merit. I think I need a few more books to make my choice if I want them together or not. Sometimes I think they are good for each other but then others I am not sure. I think she needs someone who will stand with her no matter if that is the hard thing to do. I feel like her family being who they are, really did a number on her and she needs someone to put her first.

The shifter storyline really had me enthralled I want more of this moving forward I think even the hint of an alliance would be very interesting.

Again I am loving the narration.

Loved the Book, Loved the Narrator!

I liked both the previous books in this series, but this one is the best one so far (stayed up all night listening to it). I can't wait for the 4th book to release May 3rd, 2011.

Well....

**Some spoilers**
Narrator was just more on the irritating side. She's draws out the words a bit too much with them ending trying to sound too cutesy or seductive/dramatic, if that makes sense? Just too annoying for my taste. Her male voices were awful so I really had a hard time not only distinguishing males in general but not being able to connect to them. Her female's all sounded pretty much the same too so, very difficult to keep up with who was speaking.

This book is ok. Good enough to continue with series but a bit slow on engagement. The heroine, Merit, is a bit dull, petulant and a bit immature. The hero, Ethan, is so underdeveloped that even now, I don't get him, know much about him nor has done anything to make me notice him much. Morgan is the only character I actually liked.

This series was just average. The romance was a VERY slow burn and once the H/H got together (book #3) it fell flat on all levels. There was no seduction or heat. It was absolutely tame and geared for teens. I truly wish this and other books were properly labeled to specify this as YA, erotic, adult etc!

I will go to #4 to see if this book improves on all levels but if not I'll not go through all 13+ books in this series.

This is where I get off and not in the fun way

There was enough about this series that made it so I got to book 3 but I am done now. No matter how interesting this world is to me I am tired of these characters and their bullshit. I have read enough spoilers of future books to know that I will just get more annoyed as I read on. Plus the narrator will change, which I understand, but I hate because it takes me out of the story.

Cynthia Holloway has inconsistent pronunciation and there are some words I am fairly sure she has misread. For instance, there was a scene with Merritt judging some food she thought was disgusting and Holloway described her as looking at it and saying 'belch.' That obviously makes no damn sense and probably the text read "blech,' which would make sense in response to something being disgusting. I don't know many people who say the word belch as a way of expressing disgust.

Little things like that annoyed me as well as the way Holloway garbled or rushed through words. A big part of listening to audiobooks for me is putting a voice to different characters. I am not into Holloway's male voices. They are all similar and not really matched to the characters. Also the Ethan character doesn't sound sexy at all. Give me Curran from the Kate Daniels series anytime. (I have been spoiled by listening to stuff narrated by Renee Raudman.)

I no longer want to be in the head of Merritt. I dislike most of the characters as they are underdeveloped or extremely immature. Merritt is also kind of prudish which I find weird. Like sure you may not be the type to want to hear a blow by blow of your friends' sex lives, but she gets embarrassed and blushes at even the mildest references to sex. She is a bit whiney and so much in denial about things it is frustrating.

I find between characters (Merritt) eating, raising eyebrows or being dangerously handsome or beautiful there is not much going on. All I really know about Ethan is that despite being 400 years old he has not spent much of that time developing any emotional intelligence. Oh and he's hot and wears Armani. In fact, all the characters suffer from being severely emotionally underdeveloped. They are quick to jump to conclusions, keep secrets and never fully talk about anything. Cadigan house feels more like a dorm than an elite old vampire house.

In general, all the decisions the characters make, make little sense. Why is inexperienced Merritt responsible for the safety of an Apex Shifter Alpha? Merritt, who was previously taken down by one single kick, is responsible for protecting a house, a 400-year-old vampire, and a shifter alpha. Why? Literally the newest most inexperienced vampire is responsible for so much. I get that she is strong but they haven't exactly explored that strength or shown how she really brings that much more to the table than anyone else. Also she is quick to make judgements without all the information. *Spoiler* so what if she bested Ethan in one fight. She used their relationship as an emotional blow to catch him off guard that doesn't really show me that she is more powerful than him or better as a fighter. It shows she used their personal issues to attack a stronger vampire.

Overall I only like Jeff as a character. Jeff is a sweet character who is funny and seemingly genuine. I would rather read a book about Jeff. But alas there is no Jeff book so I am must bid farewell to the Chicagoland Vampires because I don't care to listen to anything else about them or their eyebrows.

Fun!

A good story that is well written. Tense situations but with a sneaky sense of hunor.
