Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes | [Denise Grover Swank]

Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes

For Rose Gardner, working at the DMV on a Friday afternoon is bad even before she sees a vision of herself dead. She's had plenty of visions, usually boring ones like someone's toilet's overflowed, but she's never seen one of herself before. When her overbearing momma winds up murdered on her sofa instead, two things are certain: There isn't enough hydrogen peroxide in the state of Arkansas to get that stain out, and Rose is the prime suspect.

Publisher's Summary

For Rose Gardner, working at the DMV on a Friday afternoon is bad even before she sees a vision of herself dead. She's had plenty of visions, usually boring ones like someone's toilet's overflowed, but she's never seen one of herself before. When her overbearing momma winds up murdered on her sofa instead, two things are certain: There isn't enough hydrogen peroxide in the state of Arkansas to get that stain out, and Rose is the prime suspect.

Rose realizes she's wasted 24 years of living and makes a list on the back of a Wal-Mart receipt: 28 things she wants to accomplish before her vision comes true. She's well on her way with the help of her next door neighbor Joe, who has no trouble teaching Rose the rules of drinking, but won't help with number 15 - do more with a man. Joe's new to town, but it doesn't take a vision for Rose to realize he's got plenty secrets of his own.

Somebody thinks Rose has something they want and they'll do anything to get it. Her house is broken into, someone else she knows is murdered, and suddenly, dying a virgin in the Fenton County jail isn't her biggest worry after all.

"Romantic Suspense with ESP and Southern Setting"

I'm trying to mention all of the things that might make this book either annoying or attractive to a reader. It's first person, it's more romantic suspense than mystery. There's a twist at the end but it's unnecessary and out of left field.

The heroine is a beat down southern employee of the DMV in a small town where everyone knows everyone else's business. She also is set aside because she has visions that she immediately blurts out to whoever she is talking to when they occur, making the town (for some odd reason) think she is peculiar. On this date she is trying to process a license renewal when she has a vision of herself dead and passes out.

She lives with her abusive mother, has a cute neighbor named Joe and finally decides that she is going to escape from her life of not so quiet desperation. So she sits down with a Wal-Mart slip and makes a list of things she wants to do before she dies which is where the title comes from because the list contains 28 items.

I was enjoying it in a casual way up to about half way through it, knew who one of the villains was because there was no attempt to hide it, and then revelations occurred that just made the whole story less interesting.

This is another book that I'm glad I bought at the reduced whispersync price. The narrator was good but I lost interest after the revelations, skipped to the Kindle version and skimmed to the end to see it was going to get any better. It doesn't.

So, if you like first person romantic suspense with some ESP set in the south and are not too demanding about the suspense part then this is worth the reduced price. It just didn't do it for me. I thought the author got sloppy with the revelations that killed some of the interest I had in the characters up to that point.

This is the first book in a series but I'm not going to be buying any more.

    "Quite funny at times!"

This is one of those great combinations of runny, suspenseful and romantic. I like all of the characters and much of their interaction. I'm not that crazy about the expressions of dismay at times The heroine says things like "Oh crappy doodles") but otherwise find it enjoyable.
The reader has a great accent for this book but her inflections get old fast. She raises her voice at the end of every sentence. It can get quite annoying, but hot enough so to spoil the book..

    "Loved it!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes! This is one fun and action filled story that would appeal to many of my reader friends.

What other book might you compare Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes to and why?

Sleeping in Eden by Nicole Baart

Have you listened to any of Frances Fuller’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, this was the first one.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I wish I had the time to listen to a book in one sitting, but that is not the case.

    Any additional comments?

It has been a while since I enjoyed a book as much as I enjoyed this one. This was a fun light story filled with action and lots of trouble. The main character, Rose, was an unusual damsel in distress. Now that I think about it... she appeared to be needing help, but in fact, she was very resourceful and proved herself to be able to stand on her two feet.

This is the first book of the series. I am looking forward to get acquainted with the next ones.

"Almost finished chapter 5, but I can go no further"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

    A more likable, believable character.

What was most disappointing about Denise Grover Swank’s story?

The main character and her ridiculous thought process; I just couldn't relate her to a real, existing person with any intelligence. Because of this, I was constantly conscious that I was listening to fiction- I kept waiting to just get lost in a story.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Frances Fuller?

I don't know that anyone should narrate a sub par story. In this case, I found the reader's one-note cadence infuriatingly annoying. Her inflection was a kind of 'up-speak', where sentences always end on a high note. Perhaps the reading of the main character in this voice had something to do with her seeming ditzy and unemotional.

What character would you cut from Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes?

    All of them

    Any additional comments?

I think it's awesome that someone wrote a book, and someone else read it aloud. I am happy to be in the minority, opinion-wise; so many people rated this book very highly. For that reason, I bought it (thankfully at a very discounted price). Reviews are subjective to the writer, but I felt like this book might be more enjoyable to a very young reader however the subject matter is not really geared to that so.... back to Stephen King, for me.

    "So Funny, So Fun"

This was such a fun listen. The characters are well-drawn, and crazy. I loved the book. I hope Ms. Grover Swank will write more in this vein. In looking at her Audible listing, it appears that she's writing mainly young adult books. My fingers are crossed for more like this one.

If you could sum up Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes in three words, what would they be?

    Funny, charming and engaging

What did you like best about this story?

The humor and how likable the main character was

Which character – as performed by Frances Fuller – was your favorite?

    The main character

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    yes

    Any additional comments?

It took a little bit to adjust to the narrator's heavy southern accent but once I got used to it, I was so drawn into the story I didn't want to stop listening. I don't usually leave comments but I felt this story should be shared since it was so fun to listen to.
