Publisher's summary

A life hangs in the balance… A king held for ransom, a country under thumb, clans at one another’s throats. Malcolm of clan MacKintosh has enough to worry about without finding a mysterious lass sleeping on the side of his road. He tries to help her — in his overbearing, arrogant way — and winds up flat on his back. God’s blood, who is this woman…and why does she captivate him so?

And only she can tip the scales.

The fortune-teller said something about saving a life, then zapped Alethia Goodsky back to fifteenth-century Scotland — a land bristling with broadswords and intrigue. Alethia is no damsel in distress, though, even if brawny, blue-eyed Malcolm has sworn to protect her. With her wits and special abilities, she races to solve the gypsy’s mystery and protect those she’s come to love. The stakes climb higher and enemies close in, forcing Alethia to choose between finding her way home…and staying true to her Highlander.

Teeth-grindingly annoying narrator!

Apart from some blatant plagiarism in parts, the story is quite entertaining; however the narrator's monotonous nasal twang, apart from the habit of finishing every phrase with a two-note terminal (up, then down) even on single syllables, can drive the most even-tempered listener to drink. It was rather like listening to a teenage boy with a half-broken voice and a very bad sinus infection, definitely not an enjoyable experience!

You're not the "Bossame"!!

I almost skipped this one because of the bad reviews but I'm glad I took a chance.

This is a light and humorous highlander time-travel romance set in present day and 1423. Alethia Goodsky is of Native American decent, is an accomplished violinist, and a strong independent woman. Malcolm MacKintosh is a Scottish warrior who is strong, brave, and smart....with a quick wit. Malcolm finds Alethia and immediately they both feel a strong attraction to one another. Their time and cultural differences are evident but Alethia's Native American background allows her to become more accustomed to the 15th century. They begin to realize that they have more similarities than differences.

I did not find the narration of Angela Dawe irritating at all. Each voice was unique and I thought she did a very good job with this book.

This book is charming, funny, touching, romantic, and very entertaining.

The. Worst. Narrator. Ever

Oh my goodness, I can't even begin to express how irritating this narrator was. I felt like stuffing forks in my ears after about the first 10 minutes.Spare yourself the agony and stick to the ebook.

Charming

I liked this book because it was entertaining and had several "out loud chuckles" moments. The usual story of stubborn boy meets stubborn girl; fall in love, etc but not overdone. The setting and the language were proper and the Scottish influences were good enough for this Scottish lass. Overall, a really sweet romance as good triumphs over evil.

Loved the characters and the story building. Barbara REALLY keeps your interest while weaving historical Scotland with 21st century American personality, in Alethia. Malcolm is so charming and personifies Mel Gibson in Braveheart. The addition of the sweet, brave character, Hunter, REALLY lends to the awesome surprise ending!

I probably would have given it 5 stars, but the narrator could have done a better job. I gave Angela Dawe 4 stars in stead of 3 because she did really well with the characters but the narration part was harsh and a bit annoying .

Narration is awful!

Would you try another book from Barbara Longley and/or Angela Dawe?

Not if Ms. Dawes is narrating!

How could the performance have been better?

Take a breath, change tone to emphasize characters. Sounded like she was reading a third grade reader.

what the hell happened

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Angela Dawe is horrible. I'm still trying to make it through this book with all the stops and starts it sounds like she skipped sentences and split words in half. just listening to her is irritating. She's no Barbra Rosenblat or Susan Duerdan. I'm soooooo disappointed, I wish when I pre-ordered this that it said who was performing I never would have bought this book.

I wish she had more books like this

This book was wonderful. Interesting, exciting, well written and well read. I couldn't put it down. This author should write more books about highlanders and time travel, I just loved it.

This was a surprise of a book !

I really enjoyed the listen. Good book. Thanks Audible, I was impressed by the author and the narrator. They nailed it. Yes, it is time travel with a new refreshing twist! I don't usually listen to time traveling books as they are usually a little on the same theme. This one was good. This one is recommended.
