Publisher's summary

Scientist Maryse Robicheaux thought that a lot of her problems had gone away with her mother-in-law's death. The woman was rude, pushy, manipulative and used her considerable wealth to run herd over the entire town of Mudbug, Louisiana.

Unfortunately, death doesn't slow down Helena one bit.

DEA Agent Luc LeJeune is wondering what his undercover assignment investigating the sexy scientist has gotten him into - especially as it seems someone wants her dead. Keeping his secrets while protecting Maryse proves to be easier than fighting his attraction for the brainy beauty.

Foul language

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I was hoping for a cute, fun read, but due to the foul language I could not make it through the book.

Could've used an editor

A good book in need of an editor that would have stopped you from wondering time and again how the characters got from one scene to the other. This is a cute story that with just a bit more care would have hung together more. Even a pretty laid back reader like me can't quite tolerate the inconsistencies so I'll not be in search of the next one in this series. Too bad, because it did have potential.

Light & Airy? OR Serious & Mysterious?

Would you listen to Trouble in Mudbug again? Why?

No. I liked the book but it sounded very 'adult teenager-like'.

Would you be willing to try another book from Jana DeLeon? Why or why not?

IDK

What three words best describe Johanna Parker’s performance?

Annoying, Whimsical & Lively

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No.

Any additional comments?

I didn't know if I should take this book seriously or not. It's a mystery - It's slapstick comedy - It's serious - It's dramatic - It's childish all rolled into one story.

Is it Maurice or Mariss? Because I hear Maurice

The narrator is great, but I swear she pronounces Maryse as “Maurice.” It was distracting. But, maybe that’s because I mispronounced the name when I read this book.

Also, I wouldn’t call this a cozy mystery. Within the first few minutes, you get a “for Fx sake” and there’s other profanity scattered throughout. Also, there’s a nooky scene (ch14), which should have faded to black if this were a true cozy. Still, I’m a bit flummoxed at reviews that called this sm@t. That single scene was quite tame. There’s also a fair bit of salty, sexist humor including a running gag about Maryse not wearing underwear.

At the same time, this is only mildly funny or sexy, so I’d only rate this a smidge more than cozy. I didn’t really feel the romantic chemistry and most of the humor came from the narrator’s overacted characterizations rather than funny or smart dialogue. For $5, this was an okay listen.

⭐️For classic cozy mystery, try Flip-Flops and Murder, or even this author’s Miss Fortune series.
⭐️⭐️For funnier murder mysteries, I’d go with Stephanie Plum (although I suggest reading rather than listening to the first few in the series).
⭐️⭐️⭐️ If you like cozy adventure with a bit of guns N ammo, consider Spotless, about a hit man with OCD and a techie in over her head.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ If the paranormal romance procedural is your thing, and you want snarkier and sexier (translation: naughty nooky) start with Ready to Were (werewolf and secret agent in W.T.F. mixes it up with her former flame while solving a crazy supernatural mystery).
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Or, if you want sharper, smarter, funnier urban fantasy, I recommend the Hidden Legacy series, with magical families and starring the kick@ss ladies of the Baylor family (occasional profanity and eventual nooky several books in).

Excellent story! I hope the whole series is too!

I purchased this book after hearing the narrator Johanna Parker in another series. I almost didn't purchase it because of a few of the bad ratings, but this is a wonderful story! it is cute and quaint and the ideas are fresh and new. I really enjoyed it and am downloading the next in the series now.

Could not get past the first chapter

I got the Kindle version for free and paid $2.15 for the Audible book. It was too much for this book. The writing isn’t great and is full of over the top stereotypes. The narration saw that over the top writing, said “challenge accepted,” and climbed even higher. It’s unbearable and grated on every last nerve I have. I might try to finish the Kindle version, but cannot recommend the audio version.

Humorous Mystery

I found this book very funny and laughed out loud a couple times. The narrator had a great variety of voices and was easy to understand even though had a southern drawl. My only regret was I had to be careful of when I listened to the book. There was some swearing ( in character so allowable) but when grandchildren were in car, I couldn’t listen. I was so disappointed because I wanted to hear the story. Definitely a fun book.

Delightful

What a delightful way to pass a cold afternoon. Laugh-out-loud funny and what a cast of characters! The author moved seamlessly don one scene to the next and the twists and turns in the plot kept me riveted. I didn't want to put it down until I reached the end.
