The Huxtables have recently fallen into a great deal of wealth and prominence, and Katherine Huxtable knows that she's been lucky in every way but one. Despite her great beauty and newfound life of leisure, Katherine believes she is not made for passion or romance. She has avoided any suitors and all men of the ton, Lord Montford most of all due to his notoriety of as a dangerous rakehell.
With a sour reputation, Baron Montford certainly has a steep hill to climb - will he lose his wager or perhaps even his heart?

It pains me to write this review about an author I have the deepest respect for. This is definitely Balgh's weakest book in my opinion and I am quite disappointed with it. When introduced in book 1, Katherine seemed quite different from her character in book 2. The scene in Vauxhall gardens with Baron Montford was too unrealistic and absolutely out of character between her and a man she knew to be a "rake" of the 1st order. The pace of the story was too slow and the plot failed to draw me in. I felt that it was contrived and forced. There were no sparks between these two and I frankly could not care what happened to them. There was none of the sexually tensed banter, no moment that tugged at one's heart and no strong/proud heroine that came remotely close to the Ms Martin school's heroines of the Simply series. I gave all the simply series books 5 stars and expected the same quality of work from this author. I'm glad this is not my first listen/read for Mrs Balogh and I hope that book 3 (Meg's story) will be much better, otherwise it will be to this reader's great loss as Mrs Balogh is usually a top notch writer and this one fell short in my humble opinion.
Anne Flosnik is a wonderful narrator for the regency romance novel. She can make an average novel seem better. Mary Balogh's book 2 is so similar to book 1, that I'm not sure there is a point to getting book 3.
The ending was good. I loved the mud pit scene.
The grouchy uncle was awesome!!
This is not TV/ movie material
I am a chaplain at a local hospital. I belong to a book club. When I'm not at work I play handbells and sew.
The narration is great. Anne Flosnick does a great job with character voices and mood. It's a basic story line: 2 people enter a marriage unwillingly and fall in love. Nice, light "vacation" read. I enjoy the characters and am looking forward to the rest of the books.
Yeah, I like romance novels. So what??
Just thought you should know, that the word, "gown" does not have 2 syllables and the word "help" sounds ridiculous when drawn out a full 3 second.
I know, I know, you are very popular and work all the time and do 1 billion books a year. I just have to say that I do skip books that you have narrated because they just sound so contrived and silly and pretentious.
Sorry, my dear. I just had to say it.
PS We all know this is really for the publishers!
I always like series but I found my attention wandering while listening to this story. I like the cast of characters, and the narrator did a good job with voices, it just didn't keep my attention.
In search of the next great Cindarella story
I just finished one of her other book More than and Mistress and was fairly pleased so I purchased this one... and got whiplash When I started skipping through then skipping whole chapters I knew I was in trouble... there was no draw between the main characters I think she got caught up with the story and forgot it was a romance novel. I want my money back on this one... NO I did not finish the book.
I read so I can write
Only because Anne Flosnik narrated this did I finish it. I am very disappointed because the first book in this series was really great. The plot of this story is unreal and unreasonable. From nearly page one the end is obvious. Kate is pathetic as a character where in the previous book she was not.
I'm sorry I bought the rest of the books in this series and doubt I will listen to them soon after this disappointment.
Enjoyable book. Easy to listen to whilst driving. Like the extra characters mentioned ( sisters and relations) it makes you want to know what will happen to them as well. Good narrator. Would recommend this series to anyone wanting an easy listening book.
Yes - I enjoy Ms Balogh's writing
You could listen without having to have read the first installment
all of them
This story was a nice continuation of the first and again a very entertaining escape to a different time. You knew how the story was going to end but the getting there was very enjoyable. I have to admit there was one scene in the beginning I thought would end differently so it was a nice surprise. Ms Balogh has the ability to make you
