Publisher's summary

Paula Brackston transports listeners to the windswept mountains of Wales in this enthralling tale of love and magic.

In her small early-19th-century Welsh town, there is no one quite like Morgana. She is small and quick, and pretty enough to attract a suitor, but there are things that set her apart from other girls. Though her mind is sharp she has not spoken since she was a young girl. Her silence is a mystery, as well as her magic - the household objects that seem to move at her command, the bad luck that visits those who do her ill.

Concerned for her safety, her mother is anxious to see Morgana married, and Cai Jenkins, the widowed drover from the far hills who knows nothing of the rumors that swirl around her, seems the best choice. After her wedding, Morgana is heartbroken at leaving her mother, and wary of this man, whom she does not know, and who will take her away to begin a new life.

But she soon falls in love with Cai’s farm and the wild mountains that surround it. Here, where frail humans are at the mercy of the elements, she thrives, her wild nature and her magic blossoming. Cai works to understand the beautiful, half-tamed creature he has chosen for a bride, and slowly, he begins to win Morgana’s affections.

It’s not long, however, before her strangeness begins to be remarked upon in her new village. A dark force is at work there - a person who will stop at nothing to turn the townspeople against Morgana, even at the expense of those closest to her. Forced to defend her home, her man, and herself from all comers, Morgana must learn to harness her power, or she will lose everything in this beautifully written, enchanting novel.

Beware the quiet ones....

I know my title is on the corny side, but it is very accurate and sums up this book without giving too much away.
Morgana’s “silent” transformation from a meek and wild daughter to a fierce and protective wife is written very well, and performed even better!
There are many unexpected twists and turns....that test Morgana’s skills repeatedly.
At times, it frustrated me because I really wanted her to kick some butt, and defeat the true wicked witch...
I came to really care for these characters, and I hope Ms. Brackston will write a sequel, and Ms. Calin will narrate it. She does an excellent job with accents and male/female voices, giving more depth to each character.
If you are a fan of the magical, you should enjoy this book!

wonderful story

I am not understanding these reviews saying it was boring and predictable. it was a sweet easy flowing story and besides the fact that good wins in the end wasn't predictable. I enjoyed listening to it and hearing moregannas tale.
yes Book 1 was better but this one was good as well. paula is a great author and the narrators she picks do her stories well. I have all 4 books so on to book 3 I go.

Best Read

The story open slowly but kept me involved throughout. The lead charter is a little unbelievable but the story is enchanting.

Good read

I would recommend this book to gothic/fantasy readers. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I like it when a book ends well, and it's not just a launching pad for the next book in a series. However, I will read the next book despite the loose ends be tied. I am interested the new and different stories the author has to tell.

I did not like the accent given the characters. I struggled to say with it despite it.
