What the Critics Say

"Four plot lines are expertly interwoven to create a love story-cum-thriller in the latest work by veteran romance author Brockmann." (Publishers Weekly)
"Reader William Dufris's primary assets are his contemporary emotional range and the almost palpable color he brings to descriptive phrases. His flexible voice coaxes the listener to use more senses than just listening, a skill especially suitable for the romance genre." (AudioFile)

"Romance novel disguised as a thriller"

I still haven't finished this one. I'm four hours in the the second part and I don't think I can take it any more. The basic plot and cast of characters had enormous potential to be a top notch thriller in the genre of Baldacci, but falls short.
I've never read a harlequin romance novel, but this book is what I would expect one to be. A super soldier (super secret, super tough, super hansom, super available) returns home on leave and encounters his secret flame from his childhood days. She (of course) is a super beautiful, super sexy, super smart, super successful Dr. who has only recently become super available.
For the first eight hours of the book these two super people fantasize about each other like teenagers, but they are to each shy(?) to approach each other. I'm all for a little romance in an action novel -- and this one started out well-- but it drug on and on until it became too much

    "The first of many"

As a personal fan of the series I enjoyed having the first of the series in audio format. Imortant to remember this book was written PRE-9/11 so read it in that context. If you are not a fan of Romance, explicit sexual content (though not as graphic as some), mixed in your thrillers, this is not the book for you, if you are...enjoy the intro to the Troubleshooters.

    "Loved it!!"

This is a wonderful story of determination & strength. The narrator brings you right into the story & keeps you on the edge of your seat. I loved this book! My favorite book of the year by far.

    "Could not listen"

I can't review the book because the narration stopped me at chapter 5. I can't keep going. The narrator gets most of the blame because of the simpering tone used for Kelly - a grown up woman who is a doctor who is made to sound like an ditzy adolescent - his stilted delivery that only disappeared during the action sequences, and the fact that he managed to make everyone sound like a caricature or an idiot. I didn't like ANY of the characters because of this. But the director or editor of this audio book also needs to take the rap. The narrator could have used some direction and clearly didn't get it. And from one sentence to the next we jumped fifty years, or to entirely new characters. I'm sure in the book there would have been a considerable gap between paragraphs, and this should have been reflected in a pause. All in all, I'm disappointed that I didn't get to find out whether I like the writer.

    "Don't bother."

This book just doesn't get going. Although its supposed to be about "The Unsung Hero" it painfully dwells on each thought the two main characters have. Nothing is left to the imagination - and not in a good way. After the fifth or six time the author indicates they each have insecurites along with desires for each other - it just gets old. The author repeatedly reviews every thought pattern as they jostle for the bedroom. Oh, my will he see me smile? I saw his hair move. Was he upset? For every minute on the storyline, there are ten minutes of repeated insecurities. So very little action. A harlequin romance want to be.

    "GOOD STORY, SO SO READER"

This is the first of her troubleshooter books. She wrote other "prequals" to the troubleshooters series for Silhouette under the sub heading TALL DARK & DANGEROUS--romantic suspence among a group of navy SEALs. This story describes how Tom Paoletti leaves his SEAL team after being injured on an operation and begins the troubleshooters, while falling in love and foiling a terrorist plot along the way. I gave the story a four stars, but I would give the narrator 3 stars. He is good at changing his voice so you know when someone different is speaking, but he isn't as expressive as Patrick Lawlor, who narrates Ms. Brockmann's later books. I look forward to listening to some of the other "early" troubleshooter books.

    "Chick Terrorist Book"

After several chapters, I could not go on. There was just too much fawning and fantasizing over the two main characters by each other.

The first chapter had some nice action, but then it became a chick book about a Navy Seal who returns to his home town and renews an old romance. I kept waiting for the action to restart, but there were just lots of thoughts about each other bodies, etc.

    I finally abandoned the book.

    "Nice & Sappy"

This book was a romance writing woman doing her attempt at writing an action thriller. At first I was a little put off but then I was reminded that Lee Childs' main character looks at a woman who looks at him; they make love and then it's the next day and they get back to business. Brockmann's book is about the spaces between the words in the second half of the previous sentence. Overall, a little bit sappy, however, I think she pulls it off; the good guys win in the end and everybody is happy. I didn't give it 5 stars because I like a little more blood and guts and shooting and that kind of stuff. But, the lovemaking scenes . . . . wow! They were right up there. And, yes, I am going to recommend it to my wife. :-)

    "A complex novel --"

Suzanne Brockmann, to her fans, creates books with an extraordinary link between romance and fact. This one is more complex than usual with a number of extremely well drawn characters. Of course, steamy romance is included, and Ms. Brockmann deals with her favorite Navy SEALS.
I enjoyed it enough to keep it in my Audible "to listen" section.

    "A Good Story"

I enjoyed the way the author intertwined 3 stories into one. The story is predictable but the author does a good job of setting the table for series. Introducing interesting characters that you really want to no more about. I do think she tends to get a little wording but no more that most good authors that believe they have to use at least 1,000 words to describe a room. I won't say it the most erotic hot romanic story, but it does have a couple of steamy moments. The main female character is strong enough but it is the secondary female characters that are the most interesting. The mysterious french resistance fighter and her involvement with the two men who love her. The hero Tom brings his Navy seals in of course there is just enough mystery and intrigue to keep it interesting and wanting more.
