The trouble with Valentine's Day?
It just plain stinks!
Kate Hamilton should know. Dumped by her boyfriend and burnt out by her job, she's returned to Gospel, Idaho, where a Mountain Momma Crafters' original poetry reading is about as good as it gets on a Friday night. Then her first attempted seduction of a hunky stranger is completely rejected. So much for her self-esteem!
It turns out that Rob Sutter, former ice hockey madman, owner of Sutter's Sports - and the hunky stranger who told her to get lost - has been more than burned by love and isn't looking for a relationship. But then he and Kate find themselves in an ultra-compromising position in the M&S Market, giving the phrase "clean up in aisle five" a whole new meaning and causing a whole lot of gossip in Gospel.

I love to read / listen and I write as well. Hope to have something published some day and see my work here for all to enjoy!
Rachel Gibson does a fabulous job of writing fun and steamy books that keep you interested without having to think or concentrate too hard. The Trouble with Valentine's Day is just that. Not too much drama, but enough for some substance. GREAT performance by Kathleen Early. Good read when you need an out loud giggle and a little fantasy indulgence. Fun.
Good Books Don't Promote Violence
I usually love Rachel Gibson's book for the humor, so I was disappointed in The Trouble with Valentine's Day. I also didn't really connect to either former private detective Kate (mid 30s) or Rob, a retired professional hockey player.
When Kate goes to Gospel, Idaho to spend time with family, she keeps running into Rob, who has opened a sporting goods store next to her grandfather's grocery store. They seem too ready to believe the worst of the other, due to their first unfortunate meeting, which I found annoying and rather boring.
Normally I enjoy a small town setting but Gospel seemed to be the hometown of every redneck, bigot, gossipmonger and desperate widow in the state of Idaho. Not horrible yet absolutely not up to this author's usual standards.
I love the RG stories as each brings in another character of the infamous Chinooks NHL team. After reading it, I figured that this was an early book in her career, but no! This is a 2012, so it feels like the writer regressed a bit and was really struggling to find her wit and creativity in this book. In this one, the hero is again a former hockey player who was forced out of the NHL by a horrible crime committed against him. Our heroine, Kate, happens to move to his town to be with her grandpa and of course they meet (awkwardly) and it goes on from there. How will they get together, will they reconcile, etc... But the story falls flat. It just doesn't go anywhere, and the characters were not really believable or endearing to me.
More humor, brand-name dropping and, well, STORY. RG did this so well in her other books and it brought some good humor to the stories. I would have enjoyed more characters, conflicts, action or character development. The writing is repetitive. She uses and reuses the same descriptions, reactions, and just didn't seem to hit the mark. I would like to see more realistic reactions to curve balls that life throws at these two. It's so obviously going to be a HEA, and is fairly predictable along the way...
Narrator was just ok, pacing pretty good. She was better than some of her other attempts and certainly better than other performers that RG has chosen for her books.
Light, fluff for a time when you're busy and not hoping to get lost in the joy of listening... a good driving book.
Two more in my wish list -- hope they are getting better with age.
After after a few duds with good recommendations, it was a delight to listen to this book. Funny, believable and flawed characters -- in a way that is relatable and didn't make me want to repeatedly smack anyone for sheer stupidity.
There's no other word for Rachel Gibson except perfect. These are great characters in a cute small town. Thank you for finally getting it in audio!!!!
